Rain couldn’t dampen the third annual MS Jet Pull held Saturday at T.F. Green Airport.

The Rhode Island Chapter of the National Multiple Sclerosis Society hosted the event featuring 25 teams of 20 people each to win the bragging rights of pulling a 146,000-pound Fedex 727 12 feet across the tarmac.

The teams braved the heavy rains as they took turns pulling the jet. Each team received two tries at pulling the plane with the better time used in determining the winner. The Expert Landscaping Team from Harrisville, R.I. had the fastest time with 5.79 seconds.

Other awards were given, including slowest pull by Empowerment Gym in Cranston, who pulled the jet in 12.17 seconds. Warwick firefighters teamed up with firefighters from East Greenwich to pull the jet in full gear. For their efforts, they received the Most Spirited Team award.

James Spooner, owner of World Gym in Warwick, said it’s the second time his gym has participated. His team garnered the title of Heaviest Team, and they pulled the jet in just over nine seconds. Of note, his team last year was recognized for being the Lightest Team.

Spooner said he does not know anyone with multiple sclerosis personally, but when he heard about the pull from a friend last year, he thought it was a good idea for a good cause. He aims to have two teams compete next year.

Second place went to The Bentley Foundation Team from DiSantos and Priest with a time of 6.16 seconds, and the Lightest Team honor went to Bob’s Bull Dogs, with Robert Smith as team captain.

“Twice as many people participated this year, than last year,” said Kathy Mechnig, president of the Rhode Island Chapter.

The $10 entrance fee included a barbeque and activities.

There were plenty of activities for children, including face painting and a Black Hawk helicopter that the children could climb into.

“Fedex does this around the country, but Green is one of only two airports in New England,” Mechnig said. “Every team moves the jet.”

Last year’s event raised more than $36,000, an amount Mechnig is sure will be surpassed this year.

“We are very lucky to partner with the airport,” Mechnig said. “A big thank you to the community and everyone who came out to show support.”
