It’s good to see that local politicians have the taxpayer’s “best interest” at heart. That being the case, here is my list of reasons for people to be thankful this holiday season.

• Some city employees are thankful they only have to buy socks next year since they will be receiving new work boots paid for by Warwick taxpayers at a cost of $7,500.

• Warwick Fire Chief Kevin Sullivan is grateful that even through his department has blown through over half of its $1.7 million overtime budget in under five months; he still was allowed to purchase a top-of-the-line Ford Expedition for approximately $40,000.

• Warwick Mayor Scott Avedisian is thankful that during his testimony on consolidation at the state house, legislators didn’t find out resolutions were passed by the City Council and School Committee a few years ago giving him the authority to hire outside experts to develop a plan to consolidate city and school Information Technology functions, which he refused to do.

• Warwick homeowners who are struggling financially are thankful that the $600 annual cap on out-of-pocket municipal employee, family, prescription drug fees is only costing taxpayers $1 million this year.

• Warwick Personnel Director Oscar Shelton is pleased that taxpayers do not realize the city does not have a plan to finance the $365 million unfunded healthcare liability, equating it to paying the city’s electric bill for the next one-hundred years.

• Warwick citizens are gratified that the City Council Finance Committee adheres to the state open meeting laws most of the time, holding illegal budgetary meetings at a members home only once each year.

• Rhode Islanders are thankful they do not live in a state like Michigan with double-digit unemployment and dismal projections for future job growth.

• Warwick teachers are grateful they pay only an $11 per week co-pay for family plan healthcare. Warwick Independent School Employees are grateful they pay nothing.

• Rhode Islanders are thankful legislators will return to the State House soon - albeit to conduct annual holiday parties instead of addressing the $219 million expanding state budget deficit.

• Engaged Warwick citizens are pleased that the City Council leadership recent decision to schedule a City Council meeting at 2:30 PM on a work day to promote additional participation by residents, didn’t seem to work.

• Citizens are thankful that the Warwick Sewer Authority will repay the approximate $6 million interest fee debt they own taxpayers by 2042 and while taxpayers are accrued interest for late payments, developers have paid no interest on their balance for authority-completed work.

• Warwick senior citizens are thankful that their tax dollars are paying for automatic Cost of Living Adjustments for some retired city worker pension plans when they themselves, will not receive a COLA from Social Security.

• Rhode Islanders across the state are thankful that more and more people are feed-up with poor leadership, have begun to realize that the status quo is unsustainable, unacceptable, and are finally willing to do something about it.

if the firefighter gave back the $500 K for sick pay bonuses the city could buy the new truck and rescue vehicle.

By the way, the fire dept isnt getting the new battalion chiefs vehicle after all. (which carry all the communication, command and safety equip used on every fire or emergency scene other than routine EMS calls) They will continue to use the truck thats 10 years old, falling apart with 170k on it. Lets hope it holds up. They arent getting a new rescue either. Thankfully the city has two decent rescues. The other two front line trucks are falling apart and breaking down very frequently (including recently on the highway with a patient in back I hear) Spare trucks? yup they have ONE that works sometimes. Better hope cranston has a rescue we can borrow like we borrow Pawtuckets ladder since we have no spares. When they cant spare it, the city runs with 2 ladders. Times are tough in more ways than one.

Here's the most important thing to be thankful for during this holiday season-the loudmouth grandstanding blowhard Cushman is gone, and not a moment too soon. I'm so sick and tired about his whining about being beat in the election. Face it Cushman-you're a loser and you'll always be a loser.

Teacher union President Mary Pendergast used the firefighter $11 per week co-pay and lifetime health coverage for retirees when she introduced lifetime health care benefits into negotiations in 2005, claiming it “mirrors health care coverage for city firefighters”, Providence Journal, April 20, 2005.

The Mayor agreed with her, suggesting the School Committee and teachers “accept whatever universal language (was) adopted in our police, fire and municipal contracts” and salary increases “be in line with other municipal contracts”, Warwick Beacon, October 25, 2005.

Which retireed employees are the only ones paying a healthcare co-pay in the city? The answer, teachers. All retireed city employee pay zippo.

Also, teachers do not get lifetime healthcare benefits.

Those are the undisputed facts.

Get your facts straight. If you had bothered to attend informational meetings years ago held by Mr. Cushman and Dr. Thompson you would have heard the teachers bargaining team state they wanted the same $ 11 copay the Mayor gave the firemen.

It was our stupid Mayor that started the $11 copay that has handicapped the city. KNOW THE FACTS !!!

I know we are fed up with the status quo but before you go hooting and hollering do yourself a favors and dig a little deeper with cushmans claims. He will tell you half truths and slants hoping to fire you up and counting on you being too uninformed to see his game. He's the reason teachers only pay 11 dollars for health coverage!!! He gave I to them when he was on the school comittee!!!!!!

When is this jerk Cushman going to give it a rest? The voters sent him a clear message in the last election that they were tired of his grandstanding, his abrasive attitude, and his inability to work as a team with his fellow council members for the good of the city. Thank goodness the idiots that voted for him along with the idiots that pay attention to his nonsense are few and far between. You've outlived your usefulness Cushman-time to find a new gig.

Warwick city administrators using city computers to post emails messages should not be permitted. Do your jobs for a change and cut out some of these insane benefits.

Stop blaming others. You guys have been in power for almost 10 years and have set the policies for this city.

You sound like Obama still blaming Bush.

All the crap in this city is not the former councilman fault. Its the mayor, his personnel director and his entire administration.

I noticed that someone points out that the school committee gave the teachers the $11 healthcare copay.

Let's not forget that it was our union loving, budget busting Mayor who first gaveaway this ludicrious benefit to the firemen. The Mayor did this even though taxpayers worried what impact this benefit would have on other negotiations in the city. What about the $600 dollar cap on precriptions the Mayor granted. GOOD JOB MAYOR.

I love it when the same jerks gets so ticked off at these columns and write their foolish personnel attacks. Something in here must be striking a nerve or these idiots would not keeping bashing the author. Keep up the good work, you are saying what many taxpayers are thinking but afraid to say.

I can't figure out why the Beacon gives this blowhard Cushman a forum to spew his nonsense on a regular basis. He's nothing but a grandstanding loudmouth who has a grudge against the city because he lost the election. Here's some advice for you Cushman-move out to Colorado with your other washed up useless politician hero Laffey-Rhode Island will be a better place without you.

If the city council really wanted to save money they would give up their family health benefits. What a deal! Full-time benefits for part-time work. That would save us taxpayers $130,000 per year. And why do they need a "Council Liason"? What the he*^ is that anyway? Somebody who does the council members job for them. Heaven for bid they need to actually, dear I say it, research an issue?! $52,000 per year in salary and health benefits for this person. Amazing. Add that to the $130,000 savings if the council would actually give up their health benefits and we just saved $182,000. If the council also gives up their pensions (fat chance) that they receive after only 6 years, wow, we could really save money! Ahh, but I must be crazy. This is Rhode Island, we don't cut we just keep spending.
« Letterman he ain't.. wrote on Monday, Nov 30 at 10:16 PM »
Cushman is no David Letterman but the bit of humor I found in this so called column was "Warwick Teachers are grateful they pay only $11 per week co-pay for family healthcare". Are you serious Bob! As then Chairman of the School Committee YOU negotiated AND cast the deciding vote giving the teachers this ridiculous benefit. Funny how you never mention that little detail and you now criticze others for not taking it away from them?! That's funny! Nobody likes a sore loser Bob. Stop the crying.

Warwick is going to take a nig hit in state aid very soon with the big state deficit. What are city leaders doing to prepare for this? It looks like nothing but sending the bill to taxpayers next year with another tax increase. There are millions of dollars in savings if these issues were addressed by the major and the city council.

But the mayor is afraid of his employeees and half the council has a family memeber working for the city.

It time taxpayers revolt. Vote them out next year.

I am sick of this.
« Good Job Scottie !!! wrote on Saturday, Nov 28 at 10:08 AM »
What has the Mayor been doing all these years? Before he even considers raising our taxes next year, the Mayor get rid of all these perks.

There isn't a corporation in American that gives the workers the benefits the city does.

Why does the fire dept need a Ford Expetition? A $600 cap on family copays. Who is the idiot who negotiated that benefit?

Enough is enough, it is time the taxpayers take over the asylum.
« Your Kidding ??? wrote on Friday, Nov 27 at 07:06 PM »
What has the Mayor been doing? Our taxes increase year after year with no explanation. Everyone is blamed for the the financial problems in the city....maybe the Mayor should look at himself.

How has he allowed this to go on? It is time for the Mayor to resign.
« Enlightening ! wrote on Friday, Nov 27 at 02:23 PM »
Thanks Mr. Cushman for opening my eyes. I have listened to the Mayor on talk radio on numerous occasions and actually felt the Governor's budget cuts were doing the city a disservice. After reading your column, I now ask what has the Mayor been doing other then blaming others for the city's plight.

I can't believe the benefits the city workers get. Mayor stop with all the ribbon cuttings and start doing your job. These benefits are a disgrace.
