Last Saturday as a brisk breeze hinted at winter, children began to congregate on the steps of the Garden City Gazebo as early as 8 a.m. A few hours later, an estimated 200 people were taking their places for the arrival of Santa Claus.

Although the windy weather had taken down some of the holiday décor, Garden City employees worked quickly to repair the scene before Santa’s big appearance.

Some children brought their handwritten lists, while others had committed their must have items to memory. A 6-year-old boy named Will waited patiently for hours to let Santa know that he wanted a Nintendo DS along with his favorite Sponge Bob game.

By the time Santa arrived in his horse-drawn carriage around 11 a.m., along with Mrs. Claus and an elf, the line wound halfway around the Gazebo on the sidewalk.

Young Peter Pastore, age 4, was also waiting in line patiently. He wanted to ask Santa for a red mask and kneepads for when he runs. With determination, Peter added, “I want a remote car, but it has to be an inside one so my floor or rug won’t get wet.”

From video games and fire trucks to pink ponies and baby dolls, most of the children were clear on what they wanted this year for Christmas.

Morgan Vincco, age 6, was there to request “a puppy that swims in the water and has goggles.”

She had another request for Santa, as well.

“That he gives me more presents,” she said.

Clutching a Sponge Bob balloon, 4-year-old Jake Faiola asked for an alien fishing game from the movie Toy Story. Buzz Lightyear is his favorite character, simply, “because he is green,” he said.

After a visit and photograph with Santa, children and their families were able to enjoy kettle popcorn, hot chocolate and cookies. Horse-drawn carriage rides and rides on the Holly Trolley brought groups around Garden City.

Throughout the holiday season there are many scheduled events in Garden City. Newport Creamery will host Brunch with Santa on Dec. 6, 13 and 20, from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. and on Christmas Eve from noon to 3 p.m.

Applebee’s will host its annual Breakfast with Santa on Dec. 12 and 19 from 8 to 10 a.m. to benefit the Make A Wish Foundation.

Santa will also be making an appearance at Whole Foods on Dec. 12 from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Shoppers with pets can visit one of Garden City’s newest stores, Wag Nation, which is located across from Applebee’s, on Dec. 12 from 2 to 4 p.m. for pet photos with Santa.
