Audubon essay contest puts kids in motion

It’s a winning combination of green transportation and healthy exercise, but many children today don’t hop on a bike as often as past generations did.

To address that issue, the Audubon Society of Rhode Island announces its annual student essay contest for Earth Day 2010. This year’s topic, titled “I Want to Bike and Walk but…” focuses on the health benefits and safety issues of bicycling and walking as well as the benefits to the environment from reduced use of gasoline.

It is suggested that students write the essay as if they were addressing their town’s mayor. Participants are invited to address issues such as: What stops you from walking to school or biking to visit your family or friends? How could your town improve these situations? What would it take to make your town a more bike-friendly place? Is it safe to walk? Are there recreational bike and walking trails in your town? Can you ride to a bus stop and put your bike on the rack?

This Earth Day contest is open to students in grades three through 12, and the top prize in each grade is $50. Essays, poems or raps should be presented on one page with an optional photo or photomontage illustration, which will add to the entrant’s possible points. The name and grade of each student should be included, as well as contact information. Judges will also take into consideration cohesive ideas, grammar and spelling.

Teachers may submit five best essays from each class. The class prize will consist of an informative classroom visit on the topic of cycling. Students will also be eligible for three prizes per grade, including $50 for first, and books for second and third places.

Submit essays and illustrations by e-mail to emarks@asri.org, subject Earth Day Essay, or mail to Essay c/o Audubon Society of Rhode Island, 12 Sanderson Rd., Smithfield, RI 02917. Postmark or e-mail date must be on or before March 15.
