6 p.m. fireworks to usher in New Year

The old year will go out with a bang and the new one will be ushered in with a colorful display this Saturday at Rocky Point.

As was done for a first time last Dec. 31, the city’s traditional New Year’s Eve fireworks display will be held at Rocky Point rather than Oakland Beach. The event starts long before its dark enough for the rockets to show their brilliance. Festivities start at 3 p.m. Six food trucks are scheduled to be at the park and ready for business by 2:30 p.m. Fireworks are scheduled for 6 p.m.

Given the forecast, Mayor Frank Picozzi said Tuesday it looks like frigid conditions are out and temperatures are expected to hover in the 40s. His concern was the possibility of rain on Saturday. Reports Tuesday were for late Saturday night showers. No rain date is planned for the display and should the forecast turn nasty, the city will make the call to cancel by noon Saturday.

Ward 5 Councilman Ed Ladouceur is a convert of the Rocky Point fireworks display. Saying he is “very protective” of his ward, Ladouceur was concerned a Rocky Point show would trigger traffic problems followed by complaints over access to Warwick Neck , late night noise and by a park overflowing with litter.

“There were no complaints at all,” Ladouceur said Wednesday. “All in all it was a very successful event.” He said everyone was “respectful” of the park.

“I’m looking forward to the same results this year,” he said.

Ladouceur credited Warwick Police and Department of Public Works crews with ensuring a steady flow of traffic and parking.

“Rocky Point was left clean and in a very orderly fashion,” he said. He pointed out there were no incidents on New Year’s Eve or roughly six months later when an estimated 5,000 people turned out for the start of the Great Race from Rocky Point.

The six food trucks scheduled to be at the park starting at 2:30 p.m. are RaRa’s, Hot Potato, Casa Tia Rosa, Little B’s BBQ, Presto Strangeo and Rise & Grind. A DJ will provide music leading up to the fireworks display and there will be a “ton of raffles” reports a spokeswoman for the mayor.

Those planning to attend are advised to bring blankets, chairs and to dress appropriately.

Parking will be in the park’s main lot with overflow, if needed, on Rocky Point Avenue.
