On Tuesday, six teachers at St. Peter School in Warwick resigned and walked out of the school.
According to the parent of a student at the school who spoke on condition of anonymity, teachers at the school were recently asked by new school Principal Denise Alcala to sign an agreement confirming their commitment to “Catholic values,” prompting long-term teachers to quit. The specific content of the agreement was unknown to the parent.
The parent said that a group of more than 30 parents met with Rhode Island Catholic Schools Superintendent William Klements on Wednesday morning in hopes of getting more information about the abrupt resignations. The parent said more parents would have attended the meeting had there been mass communication notifying the school community.
It is not clear whether all teachers at the school were asked to sign the agreement or only the six who resigned. The school’s website listed 22 teachers Wednesday afternoon.
Michael F. Kieloch, director of communications and public relations for the Providence Diocese, said in a statement to the Beacon that the diocese is “aware several teachers have voluntarily resigned at Saint Peter’s School in Warwick. Our diocese, the superintendent of Catholic Schools and the Pastor of Saint Peter’s Parish, which operates the school, fully and unequivocally support the direction, leadership and vision of the principal and the school.”
Kieloch said the school is continuing classroom learning without interruption. He also said “faculty have a particularly important vocation in Catholic schools to live out the Gospel and Church teaching.”
Alcala and School Pastor Father Gagne could not be reached for comment as of the Beacon’s print deadline. This is a developing story.
