“K-19” was a moralistic movie about the Russian sub that was sitting in Providence harbor. It subsequently was open for tours and eventually sunk.

Tony Bennett headlined the Newport Jazz Festival. Bill Cosby conducted his jazz band. Isaac Hayes was also on the program.

Bob Dylan headlined the Newport Folk Festival. He was a half hour late. A “no photos” announcement was repeated several times. He hovered in the back of the stage, out of view from part of the crowd.

Veteran actor/director and Cranstonian Tony Annicone appeared in “The Lone Star Love Potion” at the Newport Playhouse.

“Jekyll and Hyde” was at Theatre By the Sea.

The Rhode Island International Film Festival found a new site at the Columbus Theatre, breaking all attendance records and replacing the current X-rated fare that was drawing diminishing audiences to the historic building.

40 Years Ago

Providence Inner City Arts held its eighth annual Florentine Faire at Lincoln Woods.

Kenny Rogers played at the Civic Center and promoted his racing car movie, “Six Pack.”

“Fast Times at Ridgemont High” was the popular summer teen flick. Sean Penn played a high school pothead. They also flocked to “Friday the 13th Part III.” For the adults, there was Richard Gere and Debra Winger in “An Officer and a Gentleman.”

“Whoopee!” was at Theatre By the Sea. Michael McGraw starred in Neil Simon’s “Little Me.”

George Carlin was at Warwick Musical Theatre, followed by Steve Lawrence and Eydie Gorme in “The Fifth Dimension” and “Captain and Tennille.” Barbara Eden starred in the week-long musical “The Best Little Whorehouse in Texas.”

The summer clambake at Francis Farms in Rehoboth cost $13.

The Red Coach on Jefferson Blvd. had “luscious lobster pies” for $7.95.

Rumplestiltskins on Post Road had all-you-could-eat chowder and clam cakes on Saturday and Sunday for $2.95.
