Black Friday has a ring to it

Joe Rocco and Farah Kinsella were on a shopping mission Black Friday to express their love for each other.

They weren’t exactly indiscrete about it either. Joe was rather loud.

“We should be able to find a ring,” he said. Intent on finding bargains, fellow Warwick Mall shoppers didn’t pause to inquire. That wouldn’t have changed things anyway. The couple arrived at the Pandora display window, the 30 percent off sign having already attracted others.

They spotted a few rings, but nothing that spoke to either of them. As people left the store, they were ushered in. Farah pointed to one ring in the glass case. It wasn’t the typical engagement ring with an offset diamond. In fact it wasn’t a diamond ring at all. That didn’t bother Joe but he appeared to question finding a ring could be that easy. More likely he knows Farah better. They moved on to another case.

They caught the interest of Corinne Krajewski. She pulled the tray of rings from the case. Farah pointed to one with a pink stone. Corinne handed it to her.

Farah looked up.

“Did you go to Bay View?” she asked. They are Bay View alumni.

Joe didn’t seem surprised. Perhaps Farah runs into Bay View alums all the time.

Farah held out her hand to look at the ring, but it slipped out of view.

“I think I’m a six,” she said. Corinne pulled out a drawer with multiple rings. All were too big for Farah. That didn’t deter her quest.

As Joe explained they started dating in high school. The relationship carried on to college. She’s a student at URI where she is studying speech pathology. He is majoring in computer science at WPI in Worchester. They are both seniors and with graduation not all that far away they’re seriously considering the future. They’re thinking of a spring or early summer wedding. Nothing is set in stone… yet.

But the ring was on their minds Black Friday.

Might this be the day they could afford the ring? They set off early heading for Warwick Mall, “Our go to shopping place,” said Joe.

That 30 percent off caught their interest although they thought Kay Jewelry was the initial destination.

Joe said he had a $1,500 budget. Farah thought that was too rich. They needed to consider the cost of the wedding. Joe didn’t retreat.

“The less we spend on the ring, the more we can spend on the honeymoon,” said Farah. Clearly Joe considered what she said but remained silent.

Farah lives in South Kingstown. Joe, who is taking many courses remotely, lives in Cranston.

Where might they live after tying the knot?

Joe wasn’t sure, maybe Cranston or Warwick, he said.

“I like East Greenwich. I love East Greenwich,” Farah said. Joe wasn’t going to object. The ring had to come first. After some more looking, they moved on. Even without leaving the mall there were more places to look.

And, besides, there was lots of time left to Black Friday.

Friday, ring, engagement
