It was a christening Friday as firefighters and city officials gathered in Station One for the blessing of twin E-One trucks that the city ordered more than a year ago. The pumpers with 780 gallon tanks, which is enough water to fight a fire for five or six minutes enabling crews time to link to hydrants, cost a total of $500,000 according to Chief Peter McMichael. They will replace older trucks, now used as reserves and reduce the department’s dependence on borrowing vehicles from neighboring departments. Fr. Robert Marciano, chaplain of the fire and police department, pastor of St. Kevin Church and president of Hendricken High School had a vial of holy water from Poland to perform the service. The water was from the font used for the baptism of Pope John Paul II that Fr. Marciano obtained on a visit to the location. Fr. Marciano joked that one of the Hendricken boys questioned if the sprinkling of the water would make for Catholic fire trucks. The assembly laughed and then bowed heads as Fr. Marciano blessed the trucks. And just in case you wonder, Fr. Marciano did not go overboard with the holy water as might be suggested from the photo Dave Bouchard captured after the ceremony and the trucks were parked on the apron outside the station. That was Mother Nature’s own blessing.
