College Notes: Hendricken grads breaking out this winter

Heading into the homestretch of his freshman indoor campaign, Hendricken product Anthony Manna has made an impact on the track for Assumption, earning a pair of podiums in distance events for the Greyhounds.

The former Hawk entered the 3000 meters at the Beacon Relays in Boston on December 10, one week after making his debut for Assumption at the Suffolk Relays, where he took part in the 5000 meters and claimed a 36th place result.

Moving to the shorter distance proved to be a good move for Manna, who stopped the clock with a time of nine minutes, 16.18 seconds to earn third spot among a field of ten starters, mostly comprised of competitors from Divisions II and III.

Just over a month later, he returned to the top three at the Southern Connecticut-hosted Sutherland Invitational on January 19, forming part of a cohort of Greyhounds that locked out the entire top six in the mile.

Manna ensconced himself in the middle of that pack, covering the distance in four minutes, 35.92 seconds for a third place finish, seven seconds off the pace set by teammate Charles Driscoll.

This weekend’s Boston University Valentine Meet marks the final chance for Assumption to tweak and fine-tune before taking part in the Northeast-10 championship meet, aiming to build on last season’s tie for third place.

Hendricken alum Adolfo Betancur has been a key part of the Johnson & Wales wrestling team this winter, helping the Wildcats rack up an overall record of 23-5 in dual meets and maintain a top-ten national ranking.

The former Hawk has shared duties alongside a pair of other grapplers in the 285-pound weight class, compiling a 14-4 mark while also claiming nine of his victories via pinfall, good for a tie for fourth on the roster.

Betancur’s personal ledger was boosted in the run-up to Christmas with three triumphs without defeat at the Chocolate Duals in Mechanicsburg, Pa., closing out the meet by pinning Shenandoah’s Daniel Basil-Barker 43 seconds into their encounter.

It was the second time this campaign that he was able to earn a pair of pins on the same day,  stopping Washington & Lee’s John Ryan Sedovy and Brian Czaus of Alvernia on November 18 at the Scott Woods Duals.

Johnson & Wales picked up a split last Saturday as they took part in duals versus Vermont State-Castleton and Springfield, falling 25-14 to the former before salvaging the day with a 30-10 upending of the host Pride.

Ranked seventh in the most recent Division III poll, JWU will close out the regular season Friday evening by paying a visit to Roger Williams, who have dropped their two most recent matches after winning eight of their previous nine.
