Open Juried Exhibit
The Warwick Center for the Arts is holding its 36th annual RI Open Juried Exhibit from Oct. 1 to Nov. 12 at 3259 Post Road, Warwick. The show consists of a variety of media and subject matter and is juried by Paula Martiesian. Martiesian has exhibited extensively around RI and is an award-winning advocate for the arts and artists. This month's Oakland Beach Association meeting will feature two guest speakers: RI Attorney General Peter Neronha and Warwick Community Development head Bill Facente. Bill will bring us up to date on the progress of the master plan projects. Boo and View
Join Garden City Center for a Halloween movie night on Oct. 14 from 4 p.m. to 9 p.m. The movie (Monsters Inc.) will be shown at the center’s gazebo. At 4 p.m. there will be Halloween crafts, games and snacks. Around 6 p.m., the movie will start. Tickets are $5 per child and proceeds will go directly to Adoption Rhode Island. 2nd Annual “No More Hunger” Walk
A walk to call attention to food insecurity and raise funds for local food pantries will be held on Saturday, Oct. 15. Last year over $10,000 was raised. Registration will begin at 9 a.m. at St Mark’s Episcopal Church (111 West Shore Road, Warwick). Many local groups and churches will be participating. White Cane Day
Join Garden City Center for Rhode Island’s White Cane Day Celebration on Oct. 15 from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. at the center’s gazebo. The event is rain or shine and will celebrate the independence of Rhode Islanders who are blind and visually impaired with lots of family-friendly activities, including a free t-shirt giveaway (while supplies last), a face painter, balloon artist, food, white cane pretzels and music! Rain Harvest Arts Festival
There will be a rain harvest arts festival at Roger Williams Park Boathouse on Oct. 15 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Celebrate water and green infrastructure with performing artist Sussy Santana, Vatic Kuumba, Providence Drum Troupe and Extraordinary Rendition Band. Environmental workshops, science demonstrations and green infrastructure tours will be available. The event is free.
Hoxsie School Fundraiser
The Hoxsie School PTO will hold a spaghetti and meatball dinner fundraiser on Oct. 15 from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. at the Shields Post (662 West Shore Road). Tickets are $15 for adults, $10 for kids and free for kids under the age of three. The event will include a 50/50 raffle as well as basket raffles. Drive-Thru Food Pantry
Spring Green Memorial Church will be holding our monthly Drive-Thru Food Pantry on Oct. 15. Chopstick Auction
The Oakland Beach Volunteer Women’s Auxiliary will have their annual Chopstick Auction at 645 Oakland Beach Ave in Warwick on Oct. 15. Doors open at noon, the auction begins at 1 p.m. We have over 123 items/baskets ranging in value from $50 to $100. We have things like comforters, Swarovski jewelry, liquor baskets, gift cards to stores and restaurants, gravity chairs, UGG slippers, etc. A chopstick for $10 will get you in ALL the drawings. They can be purchased at the door. Kitchen will be open with a limited menu for purchase along with a cash bar. Must be 18 or older. Please no children.
Fall Quilt Show
The 200 member Narragansett Bay Quilters Association will hold a fall quilt show “Harvest of Quilts” on Oct. 14 and 15 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the United Methodist Church 1558 South County Trail (Route 2) East Greenwich. A variety of quilts will be featured. A special exhibit by the education committee along with the famous raffle baskets and “Sea Stars” a queen size quilt to be chosen. New to the show is the “Boutique at NBQA,” a shopping experience with quilters’ designer and vintage fabrics. An RI cookbook, autographed by author/member Barbara Stetson will be available. Entrance fee is $5. Children under 12 enter for free. The complete show is handicapped accessible and plenty of free parking.
Capturing the Past Plein Air
The East Greenwich Art Club is having a Plein Air event, “Capturing the Past,” at the New England Wireless & Steam Museum (1300 Frenchtown Road, East Greenwich 02818) on Oct. 15, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. All artists are invited to spend the day painting or drawing or choose whatever medium to create a work of art. The building has historical buildings, industrial machines and communication equipment. A $10 donation to the museum is payable on the day of the event. Bring your own lunch. Oktoberfest at Little Rhody Vasa Park
There will be an Oktoberfest at Little Rhody Vasa Park, located at 10 Boswell Trail in Foster, RI (right off Rte. 6) on Oct. 16. Dinner will be served from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. with an accordion player (Dan Mackowiak) from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. and German dancers at 2:30 p.m.! The dinner ($18 for adults and $7 for children) consists of your choice of Pork Schnitzel or Bratwurst and Knockwurst, German potato salad, Spaetzle, red cabbage, Sauerkraut, and apple cake. Howl-o-ween Pawty
Join Garden City Center on Oct. 16 from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. for a Howl-a-ween Pawty. Pups are encouraged to wear their costumes (or their favorite festive collar if costumes aren’t their thing) and hang out with your fellow neighborhood pups. Enjoy treats for humans and pups, take a pic with your pooch in the photo booth, join a Halloween parade around the gazebo and meet local adoptable pups from Heart of RI Animal Rescue. Tickets are $5 and include admission for you and as many pups as you have. All proceeds from the event benefit Heart of RI Animal Rescue.
Blessing of the Animals
The Rev. William Sterrett will conduct the Blessing of the Animals on the front steps of the Edgewood Congregational Church, on Oct. 16 at 10 a.m. at 1788 Broad St. in Cranston. Church members, neighbors, guests and anyone who would like to participate in this traditional ceremony are invited to bring their pets. The church welcomes all people and offers its space for several nonprofit, educational, and social organizations, including AA, Boy Scouts and other religious congregations.
NAMI-RI: Registration Open for Family-to Family course
The Rhode Island chapter of the National Alliance on Mental Illness is now accepting registration for our next virtual Family-to-Family course which begins Oct. 17. This is a free, eight-session educational program for family, significant others and friends of people with mental health conditions. It is a designated evidenced-based program, which means that research shows that the program significantly improves the coping and problem-solving abilities of the people closest to a person with a mental health condition. NAMI-Rhode Island's Family-to-Family course is taught by trained family members who have lived experience with a loved one, and includes presentations, discussions and interactive exercises.

Free Teacher Assistant Training Program
The Comprehensive Community Action Plan is holding a free, virtual teacher assistant training program from Oct. 17 to Oct. 27. Individuals must be 18 to 24 years old, have a high school diploma or GED and a clean BCI. The classes run from noon to 3 p.m. Individuals, if eligible, can get paid to attend class. Plan on the Spooktacular at Conimicut village
The annual Conimicut Spooktacular is scheduled for Oct. 22 from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. The event is held in the center of the village with games in the Friendsway parking lot, a pumpkin display and scavenger hunt set in Donovan Park. Folks are encouraged to carve a pumpkin to display for the event. Carved pumpkins should be dropped off at Friendsway lot between 2 p.m. and 4 p.m. on the day of the event (volunteers will be there setting up for the event) and can be retrieved after 8 p.m. Volunteers are needed to help set up starting at 10 a.m. and to help run the games starting around 5:30 p.m. Those looking to assist can call Sue Hay at 529-4934 or email Dolores Kielau at DKshopper@cox.net with questions.
1916 Fundraiser
The 1916 Committee is raising money to erect a monument on the site of the Famine Memorial in Providence, in honor of the 10 young men who died on hunger strike in the spring of 1981. The latest fundraiser will be on Oct. 22 at Patrick’s Pub on Smith Street in Providence. The Irish Ramblers will provide music beginning at 3 p.m. There will be a “split the pot” raffle, a silent auction for the Memorial Quilt and food provided by Patrick’s Pub. The event is open to the public. There is no admission charge but donations are gratefully accepted.
Clouds Hill Museum Yard Sale
Clouds Hill Museum will host a yard sale on Oct. 22 from 8 a.m. to noon. There will be electronics, books, furniture, ceramics, frames, art and more. The event will occur rain or shine. The mansion is located at 4157 Post Road, Warwick.

Woodbury Church Lighthouse Christmas Bazaar
The Woodbury Church Lighthouse Craft Fair and Christmas Bazaar will be held on Saturday, November 5th from 9am to 3pm at the newly rebuilt Woodbury church at 58 Beach Avenue, Conimicut Village in Warwick. Over 25 craft vendors, gourmet foods, baked goods, attic treasures, raffle items, baskets, and a delicious lunch will be offered. On the Tracks to a Train Show
Rhode Island Model Train Expo sponsored by the Little Rhody Division of the National Model Railroad Association will be held Sunday, Nov. 6 from 10am to 3pm at the Guy L. Lefebvre Community Center, 1277 Main St., Coventry. The show features operating layouts in N, HO, O, and G scales. There will be select vendor tables. Warwick Rotary 5k Turkey Trot
Come together at the Warwick City Park Ball Fields on Thanksgiving day to benefit the Kent Hospital Employee Emergency Fund. Abstract Intuitive Painting
Warwick Center for the Arts will host “Abstract Intuitive Painting” on the first Thursday of October, November and December from 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. Individuals will learn to select colors intuitively and apply various textures and marks to a wood panel using a variety of materials to create an 11x14 abstract acrylic painting on a wood panel. Young Musicians Scholarship
The Music on the Hill scholarship directly supports the study of classical music performance. Awards will be disbursed directly to the winner’s designated instructor, ensemble program, summer opportunity, school, conservatory or college music fee. The first prize includes $400 and a performance opportunity in Music on the Hill’s 2023 festival. The second prize is $200. Applicants must be Rhode Island residents between ages 13 and 18. This scholarship includes all instruments and voice. Chamber groups may apply together and share the prize. The application includes a four to eight minute recorded video audition. Library looking for podcast geeks
Are you a fan of listening to podcasts? Do you have a lot of technical skills you would like to apply to a great community resource? The library has its own weekly podcast, Warwick Radio Online, and is building a team to help run it.
Warwick Radio Online (https://warwicklibrary.org/warwick-radio-online-4) highlights the wonderful things that make Warwick great from community resources to opportunities for entertainment to the background and history of the city. They are looking for folks who would like to be technicians to operate the recording studio and edit episodes of the show, on-air talent to serve as hosts of episodes, or managers to supervise and schedule podcast episodes. Those interested can serve in one or all of these roles. Tasks could include recording content in the studio, hosting/co-hosting, interviewing, scriptwriting, editing sound, and experience with Apple computers and the GarageBand audio-editing software. Experience would be helpful, but the library can also help you learn the skills you would need to work on the podcast.

Volunteer with Westbay Community Action
Do you have a passion and desire to make a difference in your community? Westbay Community Action’s ‘Marketplace,’ the second largest food pantry in RI, needs volunteers who are interested in a fun and rewarding experience working with like-minded people. Volunteers 17 years or older will be stocking shelves, unpacking trucks and helping individuals with picking up their food. Bowlers Needed
The Warwick Men’s Church Bowling League is in need of some new bowlers. The league was established in 1951 and is still bowling duckpin at the Meadowbrook Bowling Alley in Warwick. The group bowls on Tuesday nights from September until April. A weekly fee of $15 provides three games of bowling, small events and a banquet at the end of the season with cash prizes. Take off Pounds Sensibly (TOPS) #38 in East Greenwich has returned to having meetings every Thursday morning at St. Luke's Episcopal Church (99 Pierce St., East Greenwich) at the lower level. The meeting will be ongoing. Weigh-in begins at 9:30 a.m. and the meeting begins at 10 a.m.

Tri City Elks Lodge 1915 W. Shore Rd. Warwick presents a Custom Collectible Car Show on Thursdays at 5 p.m. around the back of the lodge. Be Kind RI
Be Kind RI is a new program that connects volunteers to their neighbors across RI through text alerts to coordinate food deliveries from grocery stores and food pantries. Meals on Wheels in Need of Volunteers
Meals on Wheels of RI is in immediate need of volunteers for its Home-Delivered Meal Program in Warwick. Meals are delivered Monday through Friday between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. The program helps homebound seniors remain healthy, safe and happy at home. Citizenship Prep Classes at WPL
Prepare for the U.S. Naturalization Interview with Citizen Preparation classes at the Warwick Public Library. Practice citizenship vocabulary, learn the necessary civics content, and work on interview skills using the N-400 application form. Classes meet on Saturdays from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. starting Sept. 25. Sign up at the library. For more information, call (401) 455-8041. Get a Job Thursdays
We Make RI, an organization that provides free manufacturing training, is hosting a series of job fairs every Thursday from 11 a.m. to 12 p.m. at their offices at 200 First Ave. in Cranston. We Make RI offer job seekers a chance to meet with employers, get career counseling, resume help and more. Some employers include Swissline Precision, Admiral Packaging, KB Surfaces, Warwick Hanger and Hitachi Cable.
