Summer just got extended until Dec. 31.

That’s one way of looking at the free meals for students program that continues through December for Warwick students and persons under 18 years old.

In addition to breakfast and lunch for those students attending in-person classes at the Warwick Early Learning Center at John Brown Francis School, the Warwick Area Career and Technical Center and Veterans Middle School, where special needs students will attend classes, Aramark will provide meals at six sites three days a week.

Jennifer Palmer, food service director for public schools, said Friday that basically the federally funded program is a continuation of the summer “grab and go” program on a larger scale.

Beginning this week, breakfast and lunch will be handed out (both meals are given at the same time) on Monday, Wednesday and Friday. Weekend meals will be provided on Fridays. Distributions will be made from 8 to 9 a.m. at Pilgrim High; 11:30 a.m. to 12:15 p.m. at Oakland Beach School; 12:30 to 1:15 p.m. at Robertson School; 12:30 to 1:15 p.m. at Greenwood School; 3 to 3:45 p.m. at Norwood School; and 4 to 4:45 p.m. at Hoxsie School. Meals are given out from the back of a school lunch truck in the front or the back of the schools.

Palmer said it is too early to know how many meals will be given out. She thought it could be as many as 1,200 meals daily – that’s breakfast and lunch – from the six pickup schools. She projected an additional 840 meals for in-school students.

Under the program, those adults planning to pick up meals need to be accompanied by a students or students. Identification of the students is not required and, as Palmer pointed out, they need not be Warwick students. They need to be under 18 years old.

As an example, Palmer said a typical breakfast would include a muffin, yogurt, juice and milk. A lunch would be a turkey and cheese sandwich, vegetable, fruit and milk. Meals that could be heated at home are planned for later in the year, she said.

Palmer said the meals are prepared at the Vets and Pilgrim kitchens by a staff of 12 under the direction of two managers.
