“I just love to cook,” said Frank Shaw of Cranston, while mixing 40 pounds of smoked pulled pork in the basement kitchen of Phillips Memorial Baptist Church. He was preparing for the lunch service at the church’s annual holiday bazaar on Nov. 23.
He got his start as a short order cook for the Howard Johnsons in Wells Beach, Maine before joining the Navy. After his service he headed west. “I did cowboy cooking (out west) for three years,” he continued.
––Now he and his wife Fran coordinate meals throughout the year for the Phillips Memorial congregation and for events such as the annual bazaar. Fran helps to keep Rick organized when they are cooking for large events. “I am culinary indifferent,” she said conceding that she’s a lucky woman to have married such a good cook.
