The Warwick Police responded to a car and pedestrian accident in the area of 1811 Warwick Ave. at 5:20 p.m. last Wednesday. The Traffic Division’s Accident Reconstruction Team investigated the accident and has determined there will be no charges filed against the driver. The accident involved one vehicle operated by 21-year-old Raymond Joutras of Warwick, and the pedestrian, 49-year-old Juanita Jefferis of Hope St. in Bristol. Warwick Fire Rescue transported Jefferis to Rhode Island Hospital, where she later died.
“It was just a tragic accident,” said Lt. Michael Gilbert of the Warwick Police. “There was no alcohol or speed involved.”
Gilbert said Jefferis was crossing Warwick Avenue to get to a bus stop. She had been visiting her grandchildren at the Jamestown Apartments and was planning to get back to Bristol by bus. The time of the day and the minimal lighting at the time contributed to the accident.
“She was crossing where there was no crosswalk and wearing dark clothing, and crossing from the dark side of the street,” said Gilbert. “There was not much the driver could do. He just didn’t see her. He wasn’t speeding and there were no drugs or alcohol involved. I feel bad for the family and I feel bad for the kid [who was driving].”
