Hawks fly to another Class A title

The 2023 RIIL Outdoor Track & Field Class Championships were held last weekend at Coventry High School. It is the final meet for teams as they now shift their focus toward the upcoming state championships next month.

The Bishop Hendricken Hawks flew to their 45 consecutive Class A title on the boys side while the Cranston West girls wrapped up the girls Class A championship.

Here are some of the results from the event:


BOYS

Xavier Wilkens took first place for Bishop Hendricken in the 100 and 200 dash. Teammate Elliot Gauvin took first in the 800 run, while Jack Moretta won the 3,000 run for the Hawks. Alex Morin took first in the shot put for the Hawks.

Hendricken’s Damon Buchanon won the javelin, while teammate Jakob Reyes won the high jump. Carson Dean took first in the pole vault for the Hawks.

Hendricken’s Anthony Manna placed second in the 800 run while teammate Brayton Gazerro took second in the 1,500 and the 3,000. Josiah Nhar took second in the discus, while teammate Keith Daigneau finished second in the hammer throw. Pilgrim’s Hunter Schobel finished second in the long jump.

Michael LaFlamme finished third in the hammer throw for the Hawks. Tristan Jordan placed third in the 300 hurdles for Hendricken, while Pilgrim’s Brandon Wolfenden took third in the shot put. Keith Daigneau finished third in the discus for Hendricken, followed by teammate Loubnen Sukkar in fourth.

Joel Felix finished fourth for the Hawks in the 100 dash, while teammate Jacob Coates finished fourth in the 200 dash. Troy Silvestri placed fourth in the 1,500 for the Hawks as well as the 3,000. Jordan took fourth in the 110 hurdles for Hendricken as well. Hendricken’s Curt Daigneau also finished fourth in the shot put.

Hendricken’s Jacob Weidinger placed fourth in the hammer throw, while Toll Gate’s Kevin Barker finished fourth in the high jump. Schobel finished fourth in the triple jump for the Pats.

Nathan Rivas took fifth in the 100 dash for Hendricken as well as fifth in the 200. Hendricken’s Andrew Frezza placed fifth in the 1,500. Keegan Tierney finished fifth in the 3,000 for Hendricken, while Pilgrim freshman Cole Manning took fifth in the shot put. Hendricken’s Shane Fagan took fifth in the discus.

Alonso Parker-Sharpe took second in the 200 dash for West, while Issac Barbosa took second in the javelin.

Parker-Sharpe placed third in the 100 dash for West, while teammate Zachary Jean Philippe finished third in the 110 hurdles. Kelan Cornell took fourth in the javelin for West.


GIRLS

Toll Gate’s Alison Pankowicz won the 1,500 run, while Pilgrim’s Dasani Stewart won the long jump, triple jump and high jump.

Pilgrim’s Keaney Bayha placed third in the 1,500 run, while Pankowicz took third in the 800 run.

Bayha later finished fourth in the 800 run, while Toll Gate freshman Vanessa Jones finished fourth in the discus.

West’s Ailani Sutherland finished first in the 100 dash while teammate Reece Vitale won the 300 hurdles. Sutherland also won the 200 dash, followed by Maia Riccio, who won the javelin for West.

Vitale finished second in the 100 hurdles for West, while teammate Praise Mayson took second in the 100 dash. West’s Quiana Pezza took second in the 200 dash, long jump and triple jump events, while teammate Sam Rosenfield placed second in the shot put.

Stalia Biosse finished third in the 400 dash for West, followed by teammate Waimea Dodge who took third in the triple jump.

Julia Saccoccio finished fourth in the 400 dash for West, while West’s Amelya D’Errico placed fifth in the 400 dash, while Vitale took fifth in the triple jump.
