John M. Thornton, 68, of New Bedford, passed away on Friday, October 10, 2025. He was the loving husband of Elizabeth (St. George) Thornton, with whom he shared 22 wonderful years of marriage.
Born in Warwick, he was the son of the late Raymond E. and Mary R. (Trudell) Thornton. John was a proud U.S. Army Veteran and dedicated Engineer at Titleist, where he worked for 25 years prior to retirement.
A true outdoorsman, John loved spending time camping with his family at Country Side and many other local campgrounds. He and Elizabeth shared a passion for traveling the world together, and spending their downtime playing pool with friends. He also enjoyed golfing and taking on any project that needed fixing. John could repair just about anything. Known for his kindness and willingness to help others, he was the first to lend a hand whenever someone was in need. Above all, John cherished time spent with his family, who will forever remember his generous heart, steady presence, and the laughter he brought to every gathering.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by three children, Jason Thornton, Daniel Thornton (Jackie) and Jonie Thornton(Tyler Leonard) ; two step children, Heather Sylvester and Todd Sylvester (Michelle); six siblings, Michael Thornton, Jeanne Browning (John), Susan Palmer, Christine Thornton, Lisa Thornton and Colleen Harvey(John); Nine grandchildren, Jason, Lauren, Roman, Brianna, Treyton(Brianna Shook) Kyli, Sawyer, Sophie and Penelope; and three great-grandchildren, Oliver, Bristol and Wrigley. John was the father of the late Melissa Cardoza and is survived by her husband Brian Cardoza.
Relatives and friends are invited to join his Chapel Service with Military Honors on Thursday, October 16, 2025, at 1:00PM, in the Thomas & Walter Quinn Funeral Home, 2435 Warwick Ave, Warwick.
