La Fazia continues effort to help Rhode Islanders transitioning from homelessness

Posted

At just 17 years old, Derek La Fazia, Jr. has already made a significant impact on his community.

A lifelong Johnston resident and junior at La Salle Academy, Derek is deeply involved in academics, athletics, and service. He is a member of the National Society of High School Scholars, La Salle’s honors and scholars programs, and participates in the Future Innovative Thinkers Club, podcast program, and chess club. He also plays varsity football and competes in track and field. Most recently, he was accepted into the United States Naval Academy Summer Session, aspiring to a future career in aviation and psychological profiling.

From a young age, LaFazia has been committed to giving back. In the past, he’s participated in various community service drives and took part in numerous service projects

Among his many accomplishments, one cause stands out as closest to his heart—the La Fazia Spring Cleaning Drive. Last year, he partnered with Crossroads Rhode Island to launch an effort to help individuals transition from homelessness into stable housing. While securing a home is a major step, many people struggle with something often taken for granted—the ability to keep their homes clean.

“After meeting with Ric Wild from Crossroads last year, I learned that even after an extremely tough journey to get into stable housing people are still very challenged with things that most of us unintentionally take for granted,” said La Fazia. “Imagine not having the basic necessities to clean your home, not being able to wash your dishes because you don't have a sponge or soap. This is a very real challenge that no one should face.”

Determined to continue the effort, Derek is once again calling on the community to support the Spring-Cleaning Drive throughout April. Donations of essential household cleaning supplies—including all-purpose cleaners, toilet brushes, glass cleaner, dish soap, furniture polish, paper towels, brooms, and mops—can be dropped off at La Fazia Auto Body, 920 Plainfield Street, Johnston, Monday through Saturday from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m.

Monetary contributions are also welcomed. Checks should be made payable to Crossroads Rhode Island, with “La Fazia Spring Cleaning Drive” noted in the memo. Donations can be dropped off at La Fazia Auto Body or mailed directly to Crossroads Rhode Island, 162 Broad Street, Providence, RI 02903.

“Giving back to my community and my faith is a huge part of my life and my family's,” said La Fazia. “I believe it’s our duty to help one another.”
