Live Like Russ Foundation set for second annual golf outing

Posted

The second annual Live Like Russ Foundation Golf Tournament is set for Sept. 19th at Cranston Country Club, and will be even bigger than last year’s inaugural outing.

The Live Like Russ Foundation honors the late Lt. Russell K. Freeman, who was a decorated correctional officer that passed away in 2020 from a battle with COVID-19.

This year’s tournament sold out in just nine days with 144 golfers and will be aided by the help of 25 volunteers. Last year’s tournament raised over $10,000 and this year may even exceed those numbers. The tournament will be followed by a dinner and the foundation will be awarding six scholarships to local students who will be attending college next fall.

Part of the scholarship application for the prospective students was writing an essay detailing how they demonstrate one of Russ’ four characteristics described by his family: Passion, integrity, authenticity, love. Three of the recipients will have parents in law enforcement as well.

Russ’ son, Stone, is excited to hold the second annual tournament and enjoys seeing so much support for his family’s foundation.

“One thing that is cool about this tournament is that we draw players from so many different communities. He was from Massachusetts so we’ll have players from there, different people from law enforcement throughout Rhode Island. It’s a lot of fun having so many different people come together and play golf, it makes for a great event,” said Stone.

More than anything, Stone and his family appreciate the opportunity to honor their father’s life while seeing others connect to celebrate this new tradition.

“That’s the best part for us. We hope that as we move forward and we begin to really embrace my dad’s legacy, that we see the light again. Hopefully we start looking forward to these dates because that’s what my dad would have wanted. Grief is a part of losing someone, but so is being able to look forward to certain things, even as simple as a golf tournament,” Stone said. “It’s cool because some of my dad’s high school friends are mixing with my friends, some correctional officers are then mixing in with their families. We’ve done a lot of great things but the core is the same, getting people together and being happy. It’s what he would have wanted.”
