Sophomore setter Yuleisy Alvelo (San Juan, Puerto Rico) notched her 12th double-double of the season with 35 assists and 10 digs as Rhode Island College swept New England College, 3-0, in the second contest of a tri-match hosted by Keene State at Spaulding Gymnasium on Saturday afternoon.
RIC’s 12-2 run in the first stanza would overpower the Pilgrims in the end, 25-21.
Trailing by two, 24-22, Rhode Island College would anchor down as Marines and junior middle hitter Sydnee Pires (Rochester, Mass.) went back-to-back on kills to knot it at 24 apiece. RIC then captured the second frame off two straight Pilgrim attack errors, 26-24.
The Anchorwomen’s, 10-1, run in the middle of the third set would prove to be the downfall of New England College as RIC commanded the stanza, 25-14, and earned the shutout.
Alvelo and fellow classmate outside hitter Sarina Marines (Cranston) have tallied double-doubles in back-to-back match. Marines recorded 12 kills, 11 digs, three aces and three blocks against the Pilgrims.
