The scenic South County town of Narragansett is famous for the Towers, the Coast Guard House. . .and Monahan’s Clam Shack.

Locals flock to the seaside building for their fill of fresh seafood where the menu always includes a special treat.

Last Saturday, it was a generous portion of garlic shrimp with Remoulade sauce for $10.99.

We added Point Judith calamari sautéed in garlic, banana peppers and sweet roasted red peppers. At $10.99, it was my favorite calamari dish.

We added two jumbo lump crab cakes with a tasty smoking chipotle sauce ($14.25) and three clam cakes and chowder ($8.99).

Clams and sea scallops are the popular items, selling at market prices, along with hot and cold lobster rolls, at $23.99. A half pint of sea scallops cost $25.99 last week.

Monahan’s is located at the end of the sea wall, just before the Towers.

The view is spectacular. You can sit on the patio or the porch overlooking Narragansett Beach and the ocean. There is a small boat launching area and entrance to the water where you can swim without the waves crashing to the shore.

Part of the renovated building houses an ice cream shop. Monahan’s started as a gas station and then became a restaurant and market.

The only challenge is parking – especially on sunny weekends. We headed north along the seawall for our return to Cranston on Route 1A. There was not a single parking space along the sea wall

Be patient and expect a walk when you find a space because after a short wait the food will be delivered hot and fresh to your table.

Fall schedule: Monahan’s is open Monday 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. Closed Tuesday and Wednesday. Open 3-8 p.m. Thursday and 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. Friday, Saturday and Sunday. Check them out online. To place an order, call 782-7524.
