New schools to better prepare our kids

Posted

To the Editor,

I keep looking at the bigger picture and get the sense the voting public which pays attention is sick and tired of connected members of the School Committee beholden to their masters who got them elected.

A member of the SC needs to be invested, bipartisan and disconnected completely from public officials which means having children who attend or attended the Warwick Public School system.  The only connection School Committee member should have is the community and the family. It is a nonpartisan position.

Three incumbent members of the SC are not running, allowing fresh new faces to step up.    The schools are in terrible shape and our sons and daughters deserve a lot better than overworked teachers and fewer resources.   Better accessibility to IEP’s for students of all ability levels and guidance counselors getting kickbacks for every kid they send off to college.

Let’s take the stigma out of VOTECH.  A selling point on a new Pilgrim HS would be its own VOTECH.

Trade jobs are just as important as a college degree, which offers no guarantee of secure employment after graduation.  Plumbers and Electricians for example are in short supply right now and in demand.

Let’s put civics, home economics and life skills back into the classroom curriculum.

Let’s teach holistically about other cultures and customs so our children have a better understanding of the world around them.  Public schools are not indoctrination centers or convenient day care.  Assembly line, one size fits all education needs to stop.  Let’s tailor education to fit the needs of the student to encourage and not discourage by tapping into strengths and talents rather than pigeonhole inadequacies or disabilities meaning in the classroom and staffing necessary to accommodate special needs

Productive learning can only happen between parents, teachers and students in a symbiotic working relationship with minimal oversight or government intrusion with imposed curriculums etc.

We need to provide incentives to keep Warwick kids in Warwick Schools and not flee to private institutions or other districts.  We do this through 21 Century state of the art educational facilities.   We can’t rely on federal funding or a one shot deal to build these new high schools.  There will be delays, cost overruns and of course supply issues come into play.

Ultimately the heavy financial burden to proper educational modern facilities will fall on the backs of the hard working taxpayers of Warwick   If this bond plan B does not go through,  its back to plan A which was renovate and fix what we have.  We are caught between a rock and a hard place and darned if we do and darned if we don’t build safe more secure new schools.
