North softball headed to regionals

The Warwick North softball junior All-Star team is headed to Connecticut this week to compete at regionals for the second straight season.

The team fell early in last year’s double elimination tournament, but is hoping for better results this time around now that it is more experienced and has added a few new pieces to the mix.

“We have a few more travel players this year so they have experience, a few of the girls that don’t play travel don’t, but overall we’re going to be OK. These girls have played other teams in the region. They’re ready to go. They’ve played together in their travel teams or recreational teams, so we’re looking forward to it,” said manager Gary Dombeck.

Key returners include pitcher Gretchen Dombeck and infielder Madison Tuirok. The team also added impact travel players Gianna Amedeo and Holly Cameron into the lineup.

Although the team had little practice time since there was not a state tournament, Coach Dombeck and company are confident that the girls will be able to hit the ground running considering their familiarity with one another in RI’s close-knit softball community.

“Any time that the girls can play together definitely helps. Last year, playing on that stage, having the games streamed, it was an added bonus since none of them had experienced that before. Playing at that facility, staying in the dorms, that was something that they will remember forever. It’s good to have going into this year’s tournament,” Coach Dombeck said.

The team is also looking to make a statement in this year’s tournament – which will be a pool play format – and a deep run in the coming days.

“We had a few tough games there last year so we’re looking to bounce back in this year’s tournament. We just need to play well together. We got our practices in, we’re itching to go,” Coach Dombeck said. “You don’t really know until the first pitch what you’ve got, but I’m confident that we’ll have a better showing this time around.”
