Ocean State artists welcome visitors

Susan Kelley Scotti’s Mr. Hare sits with his head cocked. His eyes inviting, though glossy and hard.

If you approach the varmint, he will not run. He may just lead you on a tour of Ocean State artists, assembled for a weekend of self-guided art.

Eleven artists will be on display at nine locations, during West Bay Open Studios’ (WBOS) 14th annual tour and art show, from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m., Oct. 22 and 23.

The pieces on display at Warwick’s Cloud Hill Museum, including an exhibition by Kelley Kreations Pottery (“nature inspired pottery by mother and son potters), include the hardened rabbit, but also other “nature inspired functional and sculptural ceramics.”

“The artists on the WBOS tour represent some of the finest artists in Rhode Island working in a broad range of two and three dimensional media including: oil, watercolor, pastel, acrylic, ceramic, mixed media, and photography,” according to event organizers. “Each artist of the West Bay Open Studios Tour is unique in approach, interpretation and style. We look forward to sharing our work with you.”

Kelley Scotti’s wild artwork, as well as the water colors, oils and mixed media creations of Aileen Monahan Quinn, will be on display at Cloud Hill, 4157 Post Road, Warwick.

Carol Shelton, a Warwick artist, usually creates her oil paintings in her studio at 90 Davidson Road. For the weekend tour, however, her “local landscapes, architecture” and “still life in Impressionistic style” will be on display at the Warwick Center for the Arts (WCFA), 3259 Post Road, Warwick.

“It’s all original art,” Shelton said. “It’s very diverse this year. Everything from basket making to sculptures, pottery and oil painting.”

Other stops along the self-guided tour include galleries in East Greenwich and North Kingstown.

Shelton’s exhibition, as well as the oil paintings and figure drawings from Karen Murtha, another Warwick artist, will be on display at the WCFA.

“Art always reflects the artist’s experiences and environment,” Shelton said. “To be able to see where the artist does their work; where the sausages are made. A lot of the studios, the artists will be there, and some will be doing demos (demonstrations), so people can see how the work is done. And all of the work is for sale, tax free. It’s about supporting local artists.”

Artists showcasing their work during this year’s Open Studios tour, include traditional basket maker Judy Hummel, who has “more than 30 years of experience, knowledge and skill as a basket maker, class instructor, and shop owner,” according to organizers. Hummel’s exhibition will be held at the Changing Tides Gift Shop, 355 Arnolds Neck Road, Warwick.

Nancy Nielsen’s photography will be on display at Nansea Studio, 5 Division St. (studio entrance on Duane St, Door C2), East Greenwich. Nielsen specializes in “painterly photographs of sea glass and abstracts that create a sense of mystery and wonder.”

Susan Klas Wright, a painter who works with watercolors and oils, will exhibit a variety of seascapes and scenes depicting local beach life.

“I'm overjoyed with the possibilities I see all around me,” she said. “Each watercolor and oil is painted with joy and enthusiasm inspired by the moment, the seed of an idea.  I'm in love with this life!”

Her paintings will be on display at 61 Malcolm Road in North Kingstown.

The tour will also include woodworking by Kim Boekelheide, on display in East Greenwich, and jewelry designed by Debbie Ferrazzoli, in North Kingstown.

Ferrazzoli, a 1972 RISD graduate who has been making jewelry for 50 years, crafts works of art out of “sterling silver, gold-filled or aluminum wire, hand formed (aided by mandrels, hammers and pliers) around vintage or murano glass, abalone, pearl,  semi-precious beads, brass and copper.”

Inspect Ferrazzoli’s jewelry box at 139 Salisbury Ave., North Kingstown.

The West Bay Open Studios tour will span Saturday and Sunday, Oct. 22-23. Visitors are encouraged to stop by the tour locations between 11 a.m. and 5 p.m.

Rebecca Hamilton Stockdill’s stark imagery will be on display in East Greenwich.

“Why make art?” she asks. “Through art, you can reinvent yourself every day. Each piece of art tells (its) own story, and, like it or not, you are part of each of those stories. You can create parallel universes and explore an infinite number of possibilities. With just paint, paper, brushes, glue, and scissors, you can show the world as you see it, as you want it to be, or as you fear it may become.”

Hamilton Stockdill serves on the WCFA Board of Directors. Her work “is a compilation of paintings and mixed media pieces.”

“While my paintings are based on real life and tend to have a semblance of realism (at least I hope so!), my mixed media pieces definitely lean towards fantasy and self-expression,” she said. “Take a look for yourself and let me know what you think.”
