The Rhode Island Interscholastic League Indoor Track & Field State Championships were held in Providence last weekend and a handful of locals made some noise on the big stage.

Headlining the Warwick winners was Toll Gate senior Alison Pankowicz, who took home her first career state title with a win in the 1,000 meter run.

“I’m very thankful for my coaches Norman Bouthillier and Jared DeAlmo. I wouldn’t have been able to do it without them. They help and guide me through everything and I was just glad to run a race that made them proud. I was grateful because the competition was great and they are great competitors every time I go up against them,” said Pankowicz.

Pankowicz has been knocking on the door of a championship for the past few years between her work in both indoor and outdoor track, as well as cross country. Although she did not grab many headlines prior to the event last weekend, she entered the race focused and prepared.

“(Being an underdog) was OK with me, that didn’t really bother me. I had my strategy and my game plan. I was just trying to focus on myself and I was confident going up against (the other girls). I was pretty confident in myself going in, but I knew that I wasn’t just going to go in there in win it. It was a culmination of hard work, this win was very special,” said Pankowicz.

Pankowicz was also thrilled to represent the Toll Gate community.

“It was an individual race, but I was proud to represent my team and the community. My teammates played a huge part in getting me prepared, they pushed me every day at practice and helped me get through the difficult workouts. It definitely was a team effort,” Pankowicz said.

Here are some of the results from the event:

GIRLS

Pankowicz won the 1,000 run for Toll Gate while Pilgrim’s Keaney Bayha finished second in the 1,500 run.

Toll Gate thrower Vanessa Jones placed fourth in the weight throw. Bayha took fourth in the 1,000 run and fifth in the 600 run.

Ailani Sutherland took third place in 55 dash for Cranston West and then took fourth in the 300 dash, while teammate Reece Vitale took fifth in the 55 hurdles.

BOYS

Jacob Coates took first in the 600 run for Hendricken while teammate Matt Giuliano won the weight throw. Hendricken’s Jeremy Seidi took third in the 55 dash while teammate Will Olsen took third in the 3,000 run. Pilgrim’s Hunter Schobel finished third in the long jump.

Hendricken’s Jack Moretta placed fourth in the 3,000 run.

Alonso Parker-Sharpe placed second in the 55 dash as well as the 300 dash for West.
