The Pilgrim girls tennis team wrapped up its fall season this week, finishing 5-11 and just missing the playoff cut as it stood at 11th in the standings. The top 10 teams qualified for the postseason in Division II.
Although Pilgrim took its lumps with a young roster, the players did build some momentum and confidence as the year wore on, taking home some wins both as a team and individually.
Leading the team at first singles was junior Emilia Koopman, who finished the year with a 6-10 record. Senior Michaela Fitzgerald also went 7-11 at second singles for the Pats.
“It was a good year. For the most part, we played DII teams and we had a better year than we did the year before. They’re relatively young, it was more of a rebuilding year, but they had a good showing for that,” said Pilgrim coach Matt Morris. “They played competitively against a lot of their opponents and really went for it this season which was awesome to see.”
Fortunately for the Pats, they are set to graduate just one player and are hoping that the majority of the roster will return next fall season. Morris hopes that his players continue to work hard in the offseason and return next fall ready to take another step forward as a program.
“They’ll hopefully keep working on what they need to. Each girl has something different that they’re working on,” Morris said. “We’ll have (returners) next year, so that will be nice.”
