The Pilgrim girls basketball team went to Times2 Academy in Providence on Friday evening and shut down the Eagles 36-17 to get back into the win column.

The Lady Pats relied on their tough defense to get the job done, and also got points from eight different players including all starters to pace the offense.

“We’ve been sharing the ball well, we really want to share the ball. We want to be a team that doesn’t have to rely on one person and we want to be as good as the five players out there. All five scored. It was a good night,” said Pilgrim coach Scott Bayha after the win.

Nadine Ogni led Pilgrim with nine points scored and two three-pointers, followed by Grace Maguire with eight and Giana Ramos five. Times2 point guard Fatima Nyabally led the Eagles with a game-high 12 points, all coming from three-pointers.

After enjoying a comeback season that resulted in a Division III championship appearance in 2019, Pilgrim has gotten off to an inconsistent start this time around.

Pilgrim now enters arguably its toughest stretch of the regular season, which includes squaring off against its local rival and an unbeaten powerhouse in the next week. Bayha hopes that Friday’s big win gives his club some momentum as it enters the midseason grind.

“We had tough losses to Mt. Hope and North Smithfield so this win is good for our record. Our next three games, we have Toll Gate, Tolman, and Woonsocket who is undefeated. This was a good opportunity for us to run a few things, try a few new things in our lineup and see what we could do and things like that. We tried a few new combinations to see what worked, and it did work, but we know that we have our work cut out for us for the next few days,” said Bayha.

Pilgrim improved to 4-2 with the win and will take on rival Toll Gate this evening. As the season progresses, Bayha hopes to be able to find the perfect lineup, and felt that he and his staff got one step closer by adding some size up front against the Eagles on Friday.

“I did like playing the three bigs together, that helps. In our division, I don’t think anyone has three bigs like we have which is a big benefit for us,” said Bayha. “If we use three bigs then we just need to figure out our guard positions, and Alysia Medeiros has really taken the bull by the horns, she has really become a great passer and that is what we need. If we get that then we will be hard to beat.”
