Last week in his weekly video address, Mayor Frank Picozzi reported a rash of thefts from automobiles and urged people to lock their cars whether parking at home or at a business. This week Major Joel Thomas reported Warwick Police are looking to identify a suspect.
Thomas said about 40 parked cars have been entered and rummaged through with the theft of valuables this month. He said this form of theft goes through cycles and is at a high. Virtually all reports of car entries are believed to have happened at night and in residential areas.
“One night it might be Buttonwoods and the next Conimicut,” Thomas said. Thieves don’t appear to be targeting a particular item, as was the case when GPS units first became popular.
“It’s definitely the same people,” Thomas said when asked if there could be more than one group responsible. He didn’t indicate how many people may be casing neighborhoods for unlocked cars, but it’s more than one.
Thomas said the department is “actively working the case.”
“The community has helped out quite a bit,” he added.
While not the severity of a murder or other violent crime, Thomas called thefts from parked cars “a pain” for anyone.
“We’re on it,” he said.
