ANIMAL CONFINEMENT IN VEHICLE

A West Warwick woman is facing charges after an incident outside the Minions movie led police to her vehicle, where she had allegedly locked two dogs in her vehicle.

Around 7:50 p.m., July 8, Warwick Police were dispatched to Showcase Cinemas, at 1200 Quaker Lane, to investigate a report of a woman disturbing the peace.

“While en-route, dispatch advised a white female wearing shorts and a T-shirt was carrying a breathing machine in the main lobby screaming and yelling,” Warwick Police Officer Gian A. Micheletti wrote in the arrest report.

Police on the scene met with the reporting party, who told police the woman had exited the lobby toward the parking lot. The woman, later identified as Maria Bermudez, 58, of 17 Bank St., Apt. 1R, West Warwick, was located and police spoke to her.

“Bermudez explained to Officers that she paid for the new Minions movie that was supposed to start at 1840 hrs (6:40 p.m.),” Micheletti wrote. “She stated she waited in the theater for two hours and once the movie did not start, she responded outside to the front desk to complain to staff. She stated she became angry with them because she paid for the movie, however it did not play.”

Theater staff told police that Bermudez entered the theater around 4 p.m., watched a movie, and when it ended, she allegedly remained in her seat and would not leave. Showcase Cinemas cleaning personnel entered the theater and “had to clean around her.”

Once the next film began, another patron stated that Bermudez was sitting in her seat,” Micheletti wrote. “At this time, staff responded back to Bermudez and told her she needed to leave because she did not pay for the next film. Bermudez began to cause a disturbance and swear at staff when she was escorted to the lobby. Once in the lobby, she began to curse at other patrons.”

Staff told police they would like to have Bermudez trespassed. After she was notified, Bermudez allegedly “threw her middle finger towards officers and said ‘go f--- yourselves.’”

Police followed Bermudez to her vehicle to ensure she exited the parking lot. She allegedly told police that she needed “to leave to check on her dogs in her car.”

“Officers approached the vehicle to check on the condition of the dogs, and observed that the window was only down approximately 1.5 inches, and the vehicle was parked in the sunlight for several hours,” Micheletti wrote. “Once Bermudez was advised that she would receive a violation for animal confinement, she continued to scream at Officers.”

While screaming, police wrote that they detected “a strong odor of alcohol emanating form Bermudez’s breath.”

Police found three boxes of Franzia wine, one of them empty, in the passenger seat of the vehicle.

Bermudez was handcuffed, searched, and put in the back of a police patrol vehicle.

“It should be noted that while Bermudez was sitting in the booking area, she began to urinate her shorts and was unable to control her bladder,” Micheletti wrote. “Bermudez was later provided a pair of patient pants and was secured in Cell C2.”

After calming down, Bermudez was permitted to make a phone call. Once on the telephone, however, “she became emotional … and was unable to talk.”

“She later was fingerprinted and photographed,” Micheletti wrote. “After getting fingerprinted, Bermudez slowly fell to the floor and began to shake. While she was shaking she did not lose consciousness or faint. At this time, Warwick Fire was called to the cell block, and later transported Bermudez to Kent County Memorial Hospital.”

Bermudez was charged with one count of Disorderly Conduct and is currently being held as a probation violator. She was also issued a Warwick Municipal Court Notice of Ordinance Violation for Animal Confinement in Vehicle.

Police secured the dogs — a Chihuahua and a Lhasa Apso Mix, both neutered males. Warwick Animal Control Officer (ACO) Heather L. Razza later responded to the scene and took custody of the two dogs.

“The dogs were safely transported and secured at the Warwick Animal Shelter for safekeeping,” Razza wrote in a supplemental narrative, which police added to the arrest report.
