DUI

Around 6:42 p.m., Aug. 19, Warwick Police Officer Joseph P. DiIorio was on patrol in the area of 2296 Post Road when he observed a blue vehicle “not maintaining its lane of travel,” according to the arrest report.

DiIorio initiated a traffic stop near Strawberry Field Road and identified the driver as Aroldo Carbrea, 44, of 75 Wendell St., Providence.

“As I arrived at the driver side door, I observed Aroldo to be holding his seatbelt unfastened across the middle of his chest,” DiIorio wrote. “I advised Aroldo the reason for the stop which was his vehicle leaving the lane of travel several times. While speaking with Aroldo at the driver side window I immediately observed him to have severely bloodshot watery eyes, an odor of an alcoholic beverage emitting from his breath and slurred speech.”

Carbrea allegedly told police that he had consumed “two beers” prior to driving.

He consented to a series of standardized field sobriety tests. Following completion of the tests, he was arrested and charged with DUI of Liquor (BAC 0.15 or greater, first offense).

Back at Police Headquarters, Carbrea was asked to consent to a Breathalyzer test, he allegedly replied: “Well, you already caught me so I might as well do it.” Police said they performed the test twice, and the Breathalyzer test showed a blood alcohol level (BAC) of 0.179 the first time, and 0.182 the second.

Carbrea was processed without incident and released with a district court summons.

DUI

At 8:59 p.m., Aug. 20, Warwick Police Officer Ryan E. Shibley was traveling southbound on Warwick Avenue near Miantonomo Drive when he observed a silver Honda Civic traveling the wrong way.

According to the arrest report, the car was headed north on Warwick Avenue but in the southbound lane, and nearly collided with Shibley’s cruiser head-on.

Shibley turned his patrol car around and initiated a traffic stop at the intersection of Grovedale Street and Warwick Avenue.

“Upon approaching the vehicle and speaking with the operator, I instructed him to put his window down and he immediately seemed confused, appeared flushed in the face and had moderately bloodshot eyes,” Shibley wrote in the arrest report.

The driver was identified as Michael James O’Brien, 60, of Cape Canaveral, Florida.

“Upon putting his window down, I could detect the overwhelming odor of alcoholic beverage emanating from his breath,” Shibley wrote. “I advised that he turn his vehicle off and hand me the keys for safety, which he did.”

Shibley asked why he almost caused a head-on collision. O’Brien allegedly answered that he was texting behind the wheel.

He consented to a series of standardized field sobriety tests. Following completion of the tests, he was arrested and charged with DUI of Liquor (BAC unknown, first offense). He also received a citation for Refusal to Submit to a Chemical Test (first offense), as well as Leaving the Lane of Travel and No Insurance (first offense).

“It should be noted that while at the Intoxilyzer 9000 Jailer Burns asked Michael if he had a string in his shorts around his waistline, to which Michael stood up and stated that he did not because it was a bathing suit and began to undo his button, zipper and proceeded to drop his shorts so that he was showing off his genitalia,” Shibley wrote. “Furthermore, he lifted up his T-shirt a bit to show off his genitalia even more towards us. Jailer Burns and I advised that he pull his shorts back up and zip/button up the bathing suit. He was informed that the whole interaction was being recorded due to Body Cameras as well as the other cameras in the area. He stated that he did not care to which I informed him that a Judge would not look upon this kindly and that he needed to zipper up his shorts. It should be noted that through this entire time Michael was not really listening and was very unpleasant.”

O’Brien was transported to Kent County Memorial Hospital for detox around midnight.
