DUI CRASH

A Cranston woman suffered serious injuries after she was ejected from a car last weekend.

Around 7:46 a.m., Saturday, Sept. 10, Warwick Police responded to the intersection of Warwick Avenue and Killey Avenue for a report “a single-car motor vehicle crash involving an occupant that was ejected from the vehicle,” according to a department press release.

The driver, Filipe Barros, 33, of Pawtucket, was traveling northbound on Warwick Avenue in the left travel lane when his vehicle abruptly swerved and struck a utility pole, according to Warwick Police.

“As a result, the rear female passenger, Yasmibel Lora Pena, 27, of Cranston, was ejected from the vehicle and sustained serious injuries,” police wrote in the press release. “Lora Pena was transported to Rhode Island Hospital and is still being treated for her serious injuries. Barros and the front seat passenger, Glenyfel Acosta, 20, of Providence, were uninjured.”

The Warwick Police Accident Reconstruction team responded to the crash scene and are still actively investigating.

However, based on their initial investigation, Barros was arrested and charged with Driving so as to Endanger-Resulting in Serious Personal Injury (a felony), Driving Under the Influence of Liquor or Drugs-Resulting in Serious Bodily Injury (a felony), DUI of Liquor (BAC Unknown, first offense, a misdemeanor), and Refusal to Submit to Chemical Test (first offense).

“Alcohol and seat belt use were contributing factors in this crash,” according to Warwick Police. “Anyone who was a witness to the crash is encouraged to contact the Traffic Unit at 401-468-4200.”

BREAKING & ENTERING

At 10:21 a.m., Aug. 22, Warwick Police responded to a Division Street home to meet up with East Greenwich Police who were responding to the location for the report of an alarm activation.

EGPD told WPD officers that they had a suspect in custody who had injuries from a dog bite. Warwick Police Officer Bruce D. Law arrived on the scene, and activated his “body worn camera prior to” arrival, according to the arrest report.

The homeowner told police that they observed a man break in to the residence through a window. EGPD saw a man exit the residence from a bedroom window, and it appeared he had removed the screen from the window.

Once the alarm went off, the man left the home through the same window he had entered.

The homeowner told police he would like to press charges. Police identified the man as Alcides J. Medina III, with no address (homeless).

“It should be noted that Medina had suffered a dog bite sometime during the incident, as there was (a) dog in the residence, and multiple other dogs within a kennel on the exterior of the residence,” Law wrote in the report. “Medina stated that he was bit by one of the dogs within the kennel through the fence. Medina suffered two puncture wounds to his left arm.”

Rescue personnel checked Medina’s injuries and he was transported to the hospital for further evaluation.

The homeowner told police that no items were missing or damaged, however multiple items — including food — were moved and cabinets and drawers had been opened in the bedroom and kitchen. Video surveillance also allegedly shows Medina using a towel and later spitting at one of the dogs “multiple times.”

Medina allegedly did damage the home’s doorbell camera, according to the arrest report. The camera was valued at approximately $500.

Medina was charged with one count of Unlawful Breaking and Entering of a Dwelling House and Vandalism/Malicious Injury to Property.

DUI

Around 1:20 a.m., Aug. 21, Warwick Police Officer Keara M. Enos was on routine patrol traveling north on Post Road near Airport Road when her attention was drawn toward a pair of vehicles ahead.

The vehicles were allegedly traveling close together, and the rear vehicle was following “too closely.”

“Suddenly, the Jetta moved into the left lane, and accelerated at a high rate of speed,” Enos wrote in the arrest report. “The Jetta passed the other vehicle, and moved back into the right lane, without signaling its turn to do so. As the Jetta continued north, it was traveling at a high rate of speed and swerving back and forth.”

Enos estimated the Jetta was traveling around 60 miles per hour in a 35 MPH zone.

She initiated a traffic stop on Route 37 and identified the driver as Cross P. Colasanto, 23, of 84 Valley View Drive, Cranston.

“I observed Colasanto to have bloodshot eyes, which were also glossy in appearance,” Enos wrote. “I could detect the odor of an alcoholic beverage emanating from his breath as he spoke to me.”

He consented to a series of standardized field sobriety tests. Following completion of the tests, he was arrested and transported back to Warwick Police Headquarters. Colasanto consented to a chemical breath test, which police said yielded readings of 0.179 the first time, and 0.173 the second. He was charged with DUI of Intoxicating Liquor or Drugs (BAC 0.15 or greater, first offense). He was later released to the custody of a sober adult.

WEAPON CHARGE

A Cranston man allegedly brandished a machete during a road rage “disturbance.”

Around 2:45 p.m., Aug. 24, Warwick Police initiated a traffic stop in the cul-de-sac road adjacent to 541 Main Ave.

Prior to the stop, police on patrol were notified by dispatch of an “ongoing traffic disturbance between two vehicles,” according to the arrest report.

One of the men involved told police the “opposing party brandished a machete during a verbal argument,” Warwick Police Officer Tyler J. Luiz wrote in the report.

The other vehicle was described as a grey Nissan Quest van with Rhode Island plates. Police located the van and initiated a second traffic stop at the intersection of Main and Gertrude avenues.

“Due to the nature of the call, the operator of the van … was instructed by officers to show us his hands,” Luiz wrote. “Officers removed the operator from the Nissan without incident.”

The driver was identified as Ryan A. Hogan, 43, of 97 Bracken St., Cranston.

“Hogan admitted to possessing a machete within his vehicle,” Luiz wrote in the report. “Hogan advised that he purposely waved the machete at (the other driver). Hogan claimed that (the other driver) displayed a knife in a threatening manner towards him; therefore, he displayed the machete as a form of self-defense.”

Police allegedly found the machete under the front passenger seat of the Nissan. Police said the machete was “separated from the sheath,” which was also found inside the vehicle.

Hogan was charged with Weapons Other Than Firearms Prohibited. Police also discovered Hogan’s driver’s license and registration were both suspended, so he also citations for Driving with a Suspended License (third offense) and Operating an Unregistered Motor Vehicle.
