DUI
On Sept. 9 at about 8 a.m., WPD officers responded to the intersection of Toll Gate Road and Bald Hill Road for a report of a motor-vehicle offense in progress. The officers were advised that the West Warwick Police Department knew of a white KIA driving toward that intersection. A call from a witness in a Ford F-150 pickup said the KIA was rolling on two flat tires, almost striking a pole and leaving its lane of travel.
The KIA pulled off Toll Gate Road and stopped near the entrance to the emergency room at Kent Hospital. The driver said she had parked her car to send a text message. The officer observed her to have slurred speech, bloodshot eyes and a flushed face. He also observed an open can of Miller High Life in the passenger door cup holder.
The driver said she was coming from her home in West Warwick and driving to work. The officer noticed extensive damage to the vehicle: several dents and yellow paint marks along the passenger side, the front left tire deflated and a portion of the front bumper hanging off the vehicle.
The driver consented to field sobriety tests. She was charged with a DUI of Liquor and the following citations: driving with suspended license, no insurance, presence of alcoholic beverages and laned roadway violations.
Possession of Illegal Substances
On Sept. 10 at about 1 a.m., a WPD officer was on patrol near Bald Hill Road and saw a black Dodge Durango stop at an intersection about a car’s length beyond the solid white stop line and into the crosswalk. The officer conducted a motor vehicle stop.
When asked if the driver had anything illegal in the vehicle, the driver looked around the center console area then stated he only had marijuana and cigarettes. A search of his person yielded two cigarette boxes containing several glass crack cocaine pipes. When asked again if he had any illegal drugs in the vehicle, the driver admitted to having crack cocaine in the center console.
The driver was transported to WPD headquarters. The substances tested positive for crack cocaine and weighed at 0.5 grams. He was charged with Possession of Controlled Substance, 10 Grams or Less and cited for parking/stopping in a prohibited place.
Stolen Bicycle
On Sept. 10 at about 1:15 p.m., a WPD officer met with a party reporting a larceny that occurred at the Apponaug Library, at 3267 Post Rd.
The reporting party said he had left his bicycle outside the front entrance of the library before going inside. He said he frequents the library daily and is familiar with the staff. The staff had informed him while inside the library that his bike was no longer outside.
The reporting party said he went outside and observed a female walking away with the bike. He ran after her, demanding the bike back. The suspect returned the bike, valued at $400, without incident before the leaving the scene. The reporting party pressed charges.
WPD officers were able to locate the suspect and take her to WPD headquarters. She was taken into custody for one count of larceny and three District Court bench warrants. She was later taken to the ACI.
