RI International Film Festival in 40th year

We have watched the Rhode Island International Film Festival (RIIFF) grow over the past 40 years into one of the predominant film festivals in the country.

RIIFF, under the direction of George Marshall, is one of only 10 festivals out of 7,000 nationally, and the only film festival in New England where submitted films are eligible to qualify for the Academy Awards in the categories of live action, documentary and animation.

The festival runs from August 8-14, with over 350 films being presented both in person and online.

During the pandemic, the festival was held exclusively online, with showings at two drive-ins.

“We are so pleased to be able to gather together once again and share the movie-going experience with the community, in addition to presenting workshops and our awards ceremony,” said Shawn Quirk, Programming Director.

The festival opens on Tuesday evening, August 9 at 7:30 p.m. with the Opening Night Gala at the Providence Place Showcase. Tickets, available at https://filmfreeway.com/RIFilmFest/tickets, cost $16 and are limited.

The Misquamicut Drive-In is the site of a special evening of some of the outstanding movies. You can enjoy watching the entrants down by the sea with a cool breeze and the smell of salt air. Tickets are $20 a carload.

A multitude of film forums and showings will occur during the week-long festival.
