Young Musicians Scholarship

The Music on the Hill scholarship directly supports the study of classical music performance. Awards will be disbursed directly to the winner’s designated instructor, ensemble program, summer opportunity, school, conservatory or college music fee. The first prize includes $400 and a performance opportunity in Music on the Hill’s 2023 festival. The second prize is $200. Applicants must be Rhode Island residents between ages 13 and 18. This scholarship includes all instruments and voice. Chamber groups may apply together and share the prize. The application includes a four to eight minute recorded video audition. Artist Demonstration

The East Greenwich Art Club will meet at the East Greenwich United Methodist Church, 1558 South County Trail, East Greenwich, at 7 p.m. on Oct. 4. Local, award-winning artist and teacher, Lori Jeremiah, will give a demonstration titled, “Using Watercolor as an Underpainting for Pastel.”

Jeremiah, a painter and teacher, is a member of South County Art Association and Wickford Art Association, Pastel Society of America and Rhode Island Watercolor Society. Her paintings hang in businesses, libraries, private collections in the U.S.A., Canada, and Asia, and are included in the book, “A Watercolor Day” by Oscar Ascensio.

Hoxsie School Fundraiser

The Hoxsie School PTO will hold a spaghetti and meatball dinner fundraiser on Oct. 15 from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. at the Shields Post (662 West Shore Road). Tickets are $15 for adults, $10 for kids and free for kids under the age of three. The event will include a 50/50 raffle as well as basket raffles. Plan on the Spooktacular at Conimicut village

The annual Conimicut Spooktacular is scheduled for Oct. 22 from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. The event is held in the center of the village with games in the Friendsway parking lot, a pumpkin display and scavenger hunt set in Donovan Park. Folks are encouraged to carve a pumpkin to display for the event. Carved pumpkins should be dropped off at Friendsway lot between 2 p.m. and 4 p.m. on the day of the event (volunteers will be there setting up for the event) and can be retrieved after 8 p.m. Volunteers are needed to help set up starting at 10 a.m. and to help run the games starting around 5:30 p.m. Those looking to assist can call Sue Hay at 529-4934 or email Dolores Kielau at DKshopper@cox.net with questions.

Open Juried Exhibit

The Warwick Center for the Arts is holding its 36th annual RI Open Juried Exhibit from Oct. 1 to Nov. 12 at 3259 Post Road, Warwick. The show consists of a variety of media and subject matter and is juried by Paula Martiesian. Martiesian has exhibited extensively around RI and is an award-winning advocate for the arts and artists. Roadhouse Yard Sale benefits Johnston Historical Society

Anthony Ursillo and Timothy Kee, both members of the Johnston Historical Society (JHS ), are hosting a “HUGE ANTIQUE YARD SALE at Shang Bailey’s Roadhouse,” 2737 Hartford Ave. (Route 6), Johnston, on Saturday and Sunday, Oct. 8 and 9 ( rain date: Monday, Oct. 10), starting at 8 a.m. each morning.

Go Birding this Fall

Join the Audubon this fall for morning bird walks. There will be a bird walk at Hunt’s Mills in East Providence on Oct. 9 from 8:30 a.m. to 9:30 a.m. The cost is $5 for members and $7 for non-members and is for those ages 12 and older – advance registration is required. There will also be an annual Hawk Watching trip on Oct. 22 at Napatree Point. The cost is $15 for members and $20 for non-members and is for teens and adults – advance registration is required. October Paint-Out

Warwick’s Clouds Hill Museum in conjunction with the Warwick Center for the Arts will host a  paint-out this fall on Oct. 8 from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. All artists working in any medium will fall in love with the setting. Pre-registration is required and can be completed at www.warwickcfa.org.

EG Art Club Exhibit

The East Greenwich Art Club will have its annual exhibit of members’ artwork at the Cranston Public Library (140 Sockanosset Cross Road) from Oct. 1 to Oct. 28. Harvest Breakfast

There will be a Harvest Breakfast at Little Rhody Vasa Park, located at 10 Boswell Trail in Foster, RI (right off Rte. 6) on Oct. 1 from 8 a.m. to noon. For the pancake lover, there will be several styles of gourmet pancakes: Swedish pancakes, blueberry, Almond Joy, strawberry, banana, chocolate chip and banana/chocolate chip. Oktoberfest at Little Rhody Vasa Park

There will be an Oktoberfest at Little Rhody Vasa Park, located at 10 Boswell Trail in Foster, RI (right off Rte. 6) on Oct. 16. Poet Presentation

Nonfiction@Brown lecture series presents "Diana Khoi Nguyen, Lyrical Prose, and the Intimacy of a Sentence." Capturing the Past Plein Air

The East Greenwich Art Club is having a Plein Air event, “Capturing the Past,” at the New England Wireless & Steam Museum (1300 Frenchtown Road, East Greenwich 02818) on Oct. 15, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. All artists are invited to spend the day painting or drawing or choose whatever medium to create a work of art. Abstract Intuitive Painting

Warwick Center for the Arts will host “Abstract Intuitive Painting” on the first Thursday of October, November and December from 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. Individuals will learn to select colors intuitively and apply various textures and marks to a wood panel using a variety of materials to create an 11x14 abstract acrylic painting on a wood panel. Beer Garden at Garden City Center

Join Garden City Center at the gazebo for a rotating lineup of local breweries on Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays from Sept. 2 through Oct. 2. Grey Sail Brewing will be there from Sept. 16 to Sept. 18, Narragansett Beer will be there from Sept. 23 to Sept 25 and Proclamation Ale Company will be there Sept. 30 to Oct. 2. On Fridays, the beer garden will be open from 4 p.m.t o 8 p.m. On Saturdays, it will be open from 2 p.m. to 7 p.m. and on Sundays it will be open from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. The beer garden is open to the public – no cover charge. Library looking for podcast geeks

Are you a fan of listening to podcasts? Do you have a lot of technical skills you would like to apply to a great community resource? The library has its own weekly podcast, Warwick Radio Online, and is building a team to help run it.

Warwick Radio Online (https://warwicklibrary.org/warwick-radio-online-4) highlights the wonderful things that make Warwick great from community resources to opportunities for entertainment to the background and history of the city. They are looking for folks who would like to be technicians to operate the recording studio and edit episodes of the show, on-air talent to serve as hosts of episodes, or managers to supervise and schedule podcast episodes. Those interested can serve in one or all of these roles. Tasks could include recording content in the studio, hosting/co-hosting, interviewing, scriptwriting, editing sound, and experience with Apple computers and the GarageBand audio-editing software. Experience would be helpful, but the library can also help you learn the skills you would need to work on the podcast.
