Steve Smith & Cowsills rock the Park

Steve Smith & The Nakeds were joined by the Cowsills at Cranston’s Park Theatre last Saturday night as Smith and his rocking band celebrated 50 years of entertaining Rhode Islanders and the world with their powerful 10-piece band and Smith’s equally powerful voice. Their renditions of Chicago’s songs out-Chicagoed Chicago.

They were joined by three original members of the Cowsills, the Newport family band that reached the top of the pop charts back in the sixties and are still making beautiful music together.

The evening opened with a long tribute to older brother Steve by Danny Smith, who has had his own successes in the music and comedy business. Danny took advantage of the Park’s modern video system by showing slides and videos of Smith and his band over the past 50 years, adding his own personal experiences beginning with the band rehearsing in their Smithfield basement.

He was surprised by being officially inducted into the R.I. Comedy Hall of Fame, which happens to be housed in the Park Theatre complex.

“I gave him a half hour; he took over 45 minutes,” Steve said as he hugged his brother.

The near-capacity crowd loved the Cowsills, especially sister Susan, giving them a lengthy standing ovation.

Finally, it was time for Steve Smith to do his thing, revving up the audience, going into the aisles, singing to many of his fans whom he knew by name, fans who have followed him over the years, former band members and recognizing the Naked Ladies.

Park Theatre owner Ed Brady was in the audience, smiling broadly while eating his swizzles (available at the concession stand) and greeting just about everyone in attendance.

Saturday’s event demonstrates the importance of the Park as the perfect venue for quality entertainment.

Manager Victoria Millard was busy in the office during the show booking eight more events for the Park in addition to a big country show, children’s entertainment, cover bands and top level acts.

“There’s something for everyone at the Park.”
