Surging PAL gets playoff win over LaSalle

The Warwick PAL Connie Mack baseball team swept La Salle in two games to advance to the quarterfinals in this week’s state playoffs.

PAL won Game 2 by a score of 2-1 on Monday night. Bobby Court tossed a complete game and allowed just one run on three hits while Matt Colvin and Tyler Cote knocked in runs. Court escaped a jam in the seventh inning when the Rams had runners on second and third with one out. Court would force a groundout and then pick up a strikeout to get out of the jam.

PAL rolled to an 11-1 win in Game 1 on Sunday night at Mickey Stevens. Colvin got the win on the mound by pitching five innings and picking up six strikeouts. Mason Link, Brady Maccarone, Conner Farrell and Devyn Robbins paced the team with multi-hit outings at the plate.

PAL got off to a slow start this summer season, losing five of its first six games and struggling in the field. However, the club would get hot down the stretch and has won seven of its past eight and is now a contender in the state title picture.

“We are just playing a lot better. We started the season 1-5 and have since gone on a run. That run actually started (when we beat) La Salle (in the regular season). We just pitch really well and play good defense. We have done that pretty much every game. They’ve been making all the plays,” said PAL manager Ed Colvin, whose team committed no errors in the two playoff games.

PAL will now take on Flood Ford Auto in the quarters. Flood picked up the 10-1 victory when the two squads faced off earlier this season, but Ed Colvin feels that his team is in a better spot this time around.

“(Flood is) good. They have good pitching, can hit, but our kids are confident and are excited to be where they are, especially considering the start of the season that they had,” said Ed Colvin. “We are going to continue to rely on our pitching and hopefully swing the bat. They are going to have to score some runs and play good defense.”

Game 1 of the quarters was Wednesday evening at Bishop Hendricken, but the results were not available at press time. Game 2 is slated for Thursday evening at 7 p.m. at Mickey Stevens.
