“Beautiful: The Carole King Musical” tells the story of one, if not THE best singer/songwriter of our time.
Carole started writing songs while a teenager in the fifties when rock and roll was the craze. She teamed with songwriter Gerry Goffin, (Tim Quatier) whom she later married to write “O Carol” for Neil Sedaka,
“Will You Love me Tomorrow?” for the Shirelles, “Up on the Roof” for the Drifters, and many more that are sung by two talented quartets.
Songwriters Cynthia Weil and Barry Mann were also part of the New York songwriting stable, where hit records were turned out overnight. The two couples became fierce competitors and best friends. Their personal lives went in different directions, one humorous, the other poignant.
The large cast sings and dances up a storm and Monet Sabel interprets King perfectly. Her” Will You Love Me Tomorrow” will give you goosebumps.
The musical is one of the few that you can enjoy over and over, like the upcoming “Jersey Boys”
King’s music is eternal, from the teenybopper rock and roll of the seventies to her mature “It’s Too Late” and classic “You’ve Got a Friend”.
The cast is backed by a fine seven-piece orchestra. The set by the talented Kyle Dixon has a glittering background and props that wheel in and out with ease by the cast members.
And oh, those costumes by Travis M. Grant!
Producer Bill Hanney knows how to pick winners.
“Beautiful” is one big winner.
At Theatre by the Sea through July 8. Call 782-TKTS for reservations.
