To the Editor:

Attention all Warwick residents: It is with the greatest sadness that our Sen. Michael McCaffrey, whom I have always admired, has joined hands with the pathetic Cranston Sen. Joshua Miller. Their unbelievable goal is the legalization of recreational marijuana for the “benefit” of all Rhode Islanders. It is despicable.

The appalling future effect on our children and grandchildren doesn’t appear to bother them at all.

During my eight years on the Warwick School Committee, we took care of our students to prevent their being bullied or abused. Now we have two senators and the possible majority of their like-minded legislators placing our beautiful Rhode Island students’ lives in danger. There isn’t one intelligent person in this state who doesn’t realize the terrible effects drugs have on the body and minds of its victims. Tens of thousands of our children will most likely be driving cars at age 16 while smoking, fumes pouring from the windows. All for their recreational enjoyment? Is this the future that must be faced? The accidents increasing, accordingly.

They state that two of their reasons is because “our bordering states have it,” so our state must follow them, and “Rhode Island can use the money.” The word “shame” doesn’t come close to describing this outrage. How about our illustrious General Assembly concentrates on reducing the overbearing and yearly crippling waste in the Rhode Island budget?

Sen. McCaffrey, I beg of you to stop your unconscionable leadership for recreational marijuana. It breaks my heart knowing that you are so much better than this, a very decent human being. Our 180,000 students in Rhode Island await your response.
