‘Tina’ launches national tour at PPAC

Grammy winner, Ann Nesby plays grandmother

Singing star Ann Nesby took time out from her packing to give me a call and tell me about the National Tour of the hit musical “TINA – The Tina Turner Musical” opening its year-long run in Providence Sept. 11-18.

The cast and crew had been rehearsing in New York City and were on their way to Providence for two more weeks of rehearsals before the musical began its 30 city tour.

Nesby has had a long and distinguished career in show business. She earned two Grammys with the popular “Sounds of Blackness” and was nominated six times for her own performances.

She has appeared in several movies, including the upcoming Netflix feature, “They Cloned Tyrone,” opposite Jamie Fox.

She remembers appearing at PPAC with Luther Vandross “many years ago.”

“I loved Providence,” she said. “I’m a foodie, and I can’t wait to enjoy some of the restaurants.”

“I’ve just started my own food line,” she said. “I’m a big believer in healthy eating and I wanted my son to experience all the food groups, so I’m starting a new project.”

Nesby has created a Black-Eyed Peas Casserole that integrates all the food groups and is introducing it not only to her son, but to hospital dietitians.

We got to talking about all the good restaurants in Providence, including Kin’s where I told her she can get one of her favorites, catfish.

“Tina” – Tribute To Strong Woman

I could have talked with this beautiful woman all night, but we were here to talk about “Tina.”

“This show is a tribute to a beautiful, strong woman – a comeback woman who overcomes many barriers in her life to become the undisputed Queen of Rock and Roll,” Ann said.

“She broke all the barriers for a poor Black woman. She had strong roots and a strong family, including her grandmother, Gran Georgeanna, who I am proud to play.

“There is a big story to tell here. God’s hand is on this beautiful woman who has overcome so much in her life. The musical tells the story with passion and understanding. And the music!”

“TINA – The Tina Turner Story” opens Sept. 11 and runs through Sept. 18 before hitting the road for the next 12 months. Providence once again launches a major national tour.

Tickets are available by calling 421-ARTS.
