June 11 marked the end of a chapter 13 years in the making for Toll Gate High School’s 2025 graduating class.

 244 graduates celebrated the beginning of a new journey after high school last Wednesday at the University of Rhode Island’s Ryan Center at 4 p.m.

Principal Candace Caluori congratulated the graduating class on its commitment to excel. She commended the grads on their perseverance, the attribute she said they will lean on the most throughout their life. She said overcoming obstacles brings moments of growth.

 “You never stop growing even after you leave us,” Caluori said. “Our hope is that we have prepared you for the next chapter of your lives wherever that may take you.”

Mayor Frank Picozzi said graduation day is one of his favorite days of the year. He celebrated the graduates for their hard work and for pushing through the challenges they faced.

“Graduation is more than a ceremony, it’s a turning point,” Picozzi said. “You’re closing one chapter, yes, but you’re also opening up another.”

 A highlight of the special day centered on the valedictorian and salutatorian, Joshua Maynard and John Maynard, respectively, who are identical twins.

Their long, long list of accomplishments throughout high school and academic and sports awards aside, the pair highlighted some key lessons they also learned at Toll Gate.

 John, older by one minute, said being a twin has taught him the importance of empathy. He said it is what helped the brothers realize that others’ success doesn’t take away from their own.

“Empathy doesn’t have to mean dramatic acts of kindness either,” John said. “My hope is that we will continue to spread our empathy as we move on to the next chapter of our lives.”

 In his valedictorian speech, Joshua called the class of 2025 resilient. He said even though the path forward will include mistakes, it is in how you respond that will define you.

“It’s how we rise after the fall, how we learn [and] how we grow. That’s what shapes us, that’s resilience.”

 Recalling the start of their scholastic odyssey in 2012 as the year the class of 2025 began kindergarten, Joshua noted the excitement to learn, make new friends and discover a world of possibilities that they all felt.

 “So, forget about the person to your left or to your right, and look within,” Joshua said. “Find your kindergarten self and always strive to become someone they would be proud of, open to what is going to be a new world of possibilities.”
