When retired Warwick teacher and Warwick Rotary Club member Tom Sanford came up with the proposal that the service club conduct a 5K turkey trot early Thanksgiving morning, some club members questioned how many people would show up at City Park at 7:30 a.m., if not a bit later, when they had a full day of activities in front of them. Sanford didn’t let that deter him. Word of the race went out via posters, advertisements and social media. Sanford got the high schools involved, hoping to recruit lots of young participants. Fewer than 60 turned out for that first trot nine years ago. It was a start and Sanford has built the trot on that ever since. This Thanksgiving morning, 395 registered for the event not counting the dogs that in many cases welcomed the morning challenge. Ever since the first trot, Warwick Physical Therapy Institute and its owner Dan Forlasto have been a part of the event. Dan brings along hot chocolate and puts the runners and walkers through a series of exercises to get them warmed up. Funds raised by the trot are divided between the club’s charitable causes and a local nonprofit. This year the trot benefited KEEP, the Kent Hospital employees emergency program that assists employees who have come upon difficult financial circumstances. (Warwick Beacon photos)
