WCA 10’s fall in state tournament

Posted

The District 3 champion Warwick Continental American 10-year-old All-Stars fell in each of their games in the state tournament at Chariho last weekend, ending their summer run.

WCA fell to Cranston Western 7-1 in the opening round. Jimmy Louth would knock in Elijah Costello to score the team’s lone run in the loss. Costello accounted for two of WCA’s four hits as the bats struggled to take off.

“That Continental game. We knew that they were going to have a really good pitcher on the mound to start (in Colby Fales). Our goal was to make him throw as many pitches as possible, hang in there and let the chips fall as they may. They did a better job than I even could have imagined. The kids scored some runs, defensively they made all the plays, Ayden Reyes was tremendous. Then we went to JJ Hamilton and he was able to keep them at bay,” said CWLL coach Sean Hart.

Bristol/Warren would then top WCA 10-5 in the losers bracket to send the 10’s home. Dilan Murray led WCA at the dish with three RBI while Fales knocked in another. Fales and Costello each had solid outings at the plate, each getting a pair of hits.

Charlie Mackowitz had a strong showing on the mound for WCA, pitching 3 1/3 innings and allowing three runs while striking out two batters. The WCA defense struggled, committing four errors and giving up seven unearned runs in the loss.

Despite the loss, WCA coach Jim Louth was thrilled with the team’s performance and expects it to be right back in the mix in 2023.

“This is a special group of kids and families. We had a great run and we were able to create some memories together this summer. I can’t wait to see what’s next. The future is bright for these kids,” said Coach Louth.
