WFFSC wraps up summer of fun

The Warwick Fire Fighters Soccer Club wrapped up its summer programs and shifted to the fall recreational season last week up at Winslow Park.

WFFSC continues to boast the state’s largest youth soccer program and participated in a number of different tournaments and activities over the summer months. Between hosting its own fun events and competing in the annual New England Revolution tournament up at Gillette Stadium, local soccer players remained busy all summer long.

“Summer was very busy for the kids of WFFSC. We ran a 4 v 4 Street Soccer program. It consisted of randomly put together pickup games each week, with about 100 kids that participated. They had an absolute blast, kept them active and involved throughout the summer. The coaches usually jumped into the games, which the kids absolutely love. I am not sure who went home more exhausted, the coaches or the kids, we will be looking forward to hopefully doing that again next summer,” said league administrator Courtney Cambio.

A handful of teams competed in the Revolution 4 v 4 tournament, with the U-16, U-10 and U-12 girls winning their respective divisions.

“The Revs tournament is always a lot of fun. It is definitely a long day, but we as a club look forward to it. Most teams stay after the day is over to go to the Revs game at night,” Cambio added.

Finally, the club handed out its annual scholarships - which are jointly supported by the Elanna Zuller and Gianna Cirella Memorial Funds - to Elise Van Luinen (URI) and Carlos Andrade (Johnston and Wales). The scholarships are for $500 toward their college pursuits. Former WFFSC member Sarah Lynch was also named the Gatorade Player of the Year, and she requested a grant be made by Gatorade to the WFFSC for $1,000.

For the upcoming fall rec season, WFFSC will host 52 rec teams with 600 kids, as well as 32 competitive travel teams with 350 kids. They also will see over 70 kids participate in the referee program.
