Phil Thornton may be here to clean house, but gutting a system is a different matter. Yes, some corruption and other matters were handled, but we shouldn’t throw out the baby with the bath water (an old expression that is a testament to my age). There seems to be no loyalty in our school system. Mr. Thornton looks to hire administrators from outside instead of supporting some of the good administrators that we have. It is not surprising that some of the candidates he chose to hire have refused the positions. It is not surprising that some of our current administrators have sought and found employment in other systems. Good teachers, who have received a legally questionable lay-off notice, are currently seeking employment elsewhere, leaving the Warwick Public Schools open to litigation while losing good teachers. I would doubt that anyone with an alternative offer or that any stellar recent college graduate would choose to work in the Warwick School System. It is demoralizing to the teachers who remain on the job and try to make the best of it. Superintendent Thornton is shooting Warwick in the foot, leaving our school system with only the least desirable candidates in our hiring pool. The Special Education debacle is a separate and equally disturbing issue. The ultimate responsibility lies with the Warwick School Committee. Step UP!
