Jake Marrocco raises salient points but let's be clear, Hendricken and LaSalle aren't going anywhere, nor should they. Both are members in good standing of the RI Interscholastic League (emphasis on RI), and LaSalle was a founding member of said organization. And this has nothing to do with Catholic schools drawing from a large area. LaSalle has drawn from a large area since the 1800's and nary a peep until recently. Ditto Hendricken since 1959. For some curious reason, no one had a problem with the Hawks "drawing from a large area" when they had a mediocre or bad team. Wonder why that is. So let's get to it. This is about one thing and one thing only: Winning, or lack there of. For the last six years, Hendricken and LaSalle have largely dominated the state in football. But in the previous 38 years, the two schools combined for only 8 state titles. Not horrible, but hardly dominant, during a period when both schools drew from the exact same geographic area they draw from now. So what's changed? Answer: The deterioration of athletic programs at far too many public schools. From roster numbers to quality on the field, athletics has become an after-thought at too many schools, completely independent of Hendricken and LaSalle. Barrington, the last public school to win a state championship, has been outscored 123-42 by other public schools this year, and was outscored 327-6 by other publics last year! What has happened to that program? Cranston West has also taken it's lumps from other publics, while Woonsocket and Tolman have no business in D1 in the first place. Bottom line: LaSalle and Hendricken have drawn kids from a wide area for many, many decades, but it only becomes an issue when they're winning. Curiously, Rogers' coaches never endorsed Catholic schools playing in their own league when the Navy was in town.

Clearly, Moses Brown belongs in D1, and their administration should be embarrassed.

Finally, TG's Coach Stringfellow weighing in on any of this is simply comical. He coaches at what is now one of the largest schools in the state, plays in Division 3 (??), and manages only one win over mighty Scituate. Scituate! Note to Coach: That is the fault of neither Hendricken nor LaSalle. With both Pilgrim and TG among the state's largest schools, and largely lacking the demographic challenges of many urban schools, it's time someone openly questioned the What and Why of male sports in Warwick.
