The schools are being closed because the population of the city is aging and the student enrollment is declining, period.

Schools should have been closed years ago but the school committee lacked the political fortitude to do what needed to be done. Now we are dealing with the ramifications of those poor (or lack of) decisions. Nobody wants "their" school to be closed but the fact of the matter is we have more schools than we need.
