The Warwick School Committee/Administration needs to acquire a good public perception before Warwick taxpayers are asked to fund a "State of the Art" high school or middle school. The City can't rely on anticipated/hoped for assistance from the State of RI. Whatever assistance is provided is NOT FREE; it is provided by State taxpayers of which Warwick taxpayers are part of. The City should only bond for improvements at this point; there are numerous needs at almost every school building & that would allow improvements to be made at almost all levels/locations. Almost every city/town in the State is likely to request some assistance; I don't see how a 50 % reimbursement rate of assistance would be achievable unless it's for "shovel ready " projects & then the State bond money would be gone(maybe some cities/towns might be out of luck?). One thing should be certain; NO additional improvements should be made to school administrative offices/buildings until EVERY school building has been addressed. The Warwick School Committee couldn't meet the new teachers contract requirements(to pay retroactive pay by Dec. 22) & they've had problems with the consolidation process to date. The forthcoming school year has additional consolidation measures occurring; add to that planned improvements regarding proposed bond funding of $ 85 million. One has difficulty believing that the Warwick School Committee/Administration will be able to manage all it has going on without additional problems based on its track record.
