I commend Warwick and West Warwick for taking action with this issue. I totally agree that a child should not bear the punishment for the parents lack of responsibility. Some families have legitimate needs. I think the solutions that have been formed are great. I am more concerned with those parents who can meet the need but are just too lazy and leave it up to others to cover their debt. I wonder if the reason for the rising debt is because the child doesn't go hungry and therefore there is no real punishment to the adult. The parent needs to take some type of hit in order to meet their obligations.

The school department should not be absorbing this debt. Instead of stopping the child from participating in end of year events, why not make it a requirement to enroll the following year? I would think more parents would be eager to ensure their child starts school. Or attach the debt to another of the payments required by the citizen of the city? Surely we can come up with a way to take care of the debt and still feed the student.
