While I do feel for this family, I think they hold some responsibility as well. Why didn't the alarm go off well before the 1 year mark when you didn't see things getting done? You took the money for the apartment knowing that there was a time limit. A reasonable time limit for you to get into your home. If a permit wasn't even pulled until January 1, what was happening in the months prior?

Trust is one thing but 12 months and no work is a completely other matter. If any actions were criminal, then by all means, let the police handle the matter. You and your family went through a very tough time but you are not the only family to lose their home through fire. Other people in this very community have already been through it and rebuilt. If I were in their shoes, I would have reached out for advice long before Perrreault wasn't doing what he said he would do.

Also, for those that are harassing this guy because of the news articles, STOP. We don't know the facts. He hasn't been charged with any crime yet. Innocent until proven guilty is how things work. The man was just hospitalized for a stroke. He doesn't need some vigilante coming at him for an yet to be tried criminal offense.
