On Saturday, Sept. 11, Apponaug Girls Softball opened its Fall
Ball season at the new Winslow Park.
It was a beautiful, late summer day as six games started at 8 a.m. and continued on all day until dark.
Apponaug has 18 teams playing Fall Ball out of a total of 61
registered teams from Coventry, Cranston, Johnston, West Warwick, North Kingstown and North Smithfield, among others.
The day was highlighted by a visit from Kathy Carlson-Rossi, the founder of Apponaug Girls Softball. She has followed the progress of the new fields through Facebook. Carlson-Rossi traveled from Florida to be a part of the league’s opening day, along with her daughter Katie Hoxie from New York, who started as a bat girl on her mother’s team until she was old enough to play.
Carlson-Rossi walked around the complex with League President Bob Chevian, members of the City Council and Mayor Scott Avedisian with sheer excitement.
She said it “does my heart good” to see how far the league has come in 35 years. Carlson-Rossi expressed that she is happy that so many hard working people have guided the league to where it is now.
She remembered having meetings with the coaches at her kitchen table and commented how hard it was for her to start the league with minimal support and funding.
Mayor Avedisian commented that he was able to see progress of the fields from start to finish via helicopter rides to view all the T.F. Green Airport projects. Avedisian thought the complex was amazing and it will be able to “bring tons of people and the community together.”
Carlson-Rossi had the chance to reminiscence with some of her past players and coaches who came by Winslow Park to visit with her. She was extremely proud of the league and the fact that many of the players continue to be involved with it and have gone on to coach their daughters.
