Hot Air Baloons coming to South County

Posted

One of the most popular summer events in Rhode Island – the South County Hot Air Balloon Festival – with spectacular hot air balloons, the Cannon Lady, John Cafferty and the Beaver Brown Band, a barbeque competition, carnival rides and fireworks, returns for the 38th year on July 22-24 to the URI Athletic Fields on Route 138 in Kingston.

The centerpiece of the festival is the colorful balloons. Attendees can purchase tethered rides from individual balloonists or watch the spectacular balloon glows on Friday and Saturday evening, when the burners are fired up and the balloons are lit from within.

The Cannon Lady will provide thrills as she is shot through the air several times each day. Friday evening will feature Rhode Island’s own John Cafferty and the Beaver Brown Band. Fireworks are scheduled for Saturday night, and the Kansas City Barbeque Competition winners will be announced on Sunday.

Many activities are included with admission of $10 for adults and $5 for children 14 and under. Families (two parents and children) are $25. Parking is free. RV camping is available on site.

Sponsored by the Rotary Club of Wakefield, the net proceeds of this popular event annually benefit local charities. The festival is a perennial favorite among locals and tourists alike, and Yankee magazine named it a Top 20 Rhode Island event.
